Chez Eric — Restaurant in Freiburg im Breisgau

It was the first time we visit Freiburg and stayed in the Mercure Panorama Hotel. “Chez Eric” is in the hotel and after a long drive it was natural to have dinner there. The restaurant has amazing panoramic views above the city of Freiburg im Brisgau and I suppose in the summer you can dine outside on the terrace. The staff serving in the restaurant is very young but also very friendly but professional. Every time we made eye contact we’ve got a smile back, from every single staff member. During the evening, Stephan, a charming young man, guided us through the menu and thanks to him and his colleagues we had a great experience. The food is very good, prepared with care and presented with love. The combination with wine, offered in their “des amoureux” menu was well done as every single wine complimented the dish we were having. The atmosphere is romantic, with candles on the table and subtle music. Altogether, when in Freiburg, I advise you to dine in this restaurant as you’ll get value...

Das "Chez Eric" im Panoramahotel in Freiburg ist leider nicht mehr avec Eric, denn der ist vor kurzem altersbedingt ausgestiegen. Ob das nun Auswirkungen auf die Küche hat(te) oder haben wird, kann ich nicht sagen; als wir das letzte Mal zum Abendessen dort waren, gab es Eric noch.

Heute wollten wir dort frühstücken; mit Besuch von weiter her ist das aufgrund des - logisch - tollen Ausblicks eigentlich immer eine nette Sache, und das Frühstücksbuffet war auch immer eine sichere Bank bisher.

Hier beginnt nun eine notwendige Differenzierung: Wo das Frühstück vor einigen Jahren noch 25 Euro p.P. kostete und für den Preis wirklich sehr gut war, waren es dann bis vor kurzer Zeit 30 Euro; dafür war es dann noch OK bis gut. Heute durfte ich tatsächlich 39 Euro pro Nase hinlegen, und dafür ist das Buffet bestenfalls noch Durchschnitt, tut mir leid.

Für so einen Betrag erwarte ich frische Säfte, keine aus der Tüte, eine bessere Käse- und Aufschnittauswahl und auf jeden Fall mehr frisches Obst. Das Rührei war sehr gut, aber die Würste lagen sehr fettig auf der Platte - hier könnte man z.B. mit einigen untergelegten Weißbrotscheiben dafür sorgen, daß das nicht der Fall ist. Logisch, wenn ich Würste esse, nehme ich auch Fett auf (wäre ja furchtbar, wenn nicht), aber da muß nicht noch ein Extra-Fettfilm drumherum sein. Das gleiche gilt für die Bratkartoffeln; zugegeben, das ist keine "dankbare" Buffetspeise, aber wenn ich sie anbiete, sollte ich dafür sorgen, daß sie nicht zu fettigen und labberigen halbwarmen Kartoffelscheiben verkommen.

Um es klar zu sagen, es ist nicht so, daß das Buffet oder die Qualität furchtbar wären, überhaupt nicht. Es stimmt einfach das Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis nicht mehr, das aber leider deutlich. Hinzu kommt noch das Ambiente; der angestaubte "Toskana"-Touch mit Ocker- und Erdtönen in Wischtechnik, die floralen drapierten Vorhänge und die Möblierung sind deutlich aus der Zeit von vor etwa - na - 25 bis 30 Jahren: Eine Modernisierung wäre dringend mal zu empfehlen.

Fazit: Es ist veständlich/nachvollziehbar, daß man einen "Ausblick"-Zuschlag mit einkalkulieren muß, aber hier - was das Frühstück angeht - sind wir jenseits von Gut und Böse, und daurch schlägt leider auch das Uralt-Ambiente nochmal negativ zu Buche; wenn man wenigstens in einer "moderneren" Umgebung säße, wäre das immerhin ein Pluspunkt. Ich glaube, daß ich hier zum letzten Mal zum Frühstück...

Wonderful views of Freiburg, very dated decor, and overpriced food. Service was very cold and aloof. There weren't many patrons in the restaurant but our table was the only one that -

a) They "forgot" to light the candle b) The only table that the "chef" forgot to stop by and chat. He stopped at every table (we were the only ethnicity different from others) c) They "forgot" to check on our wines or water and never asked if we needed another bottle of wine or water for a 3.5 hour dinner

This was the only restaurant in all of Freiburg where we received poor service while we saw every other table getting a different treatment. Draw your own conclusions. Go literally...
