Situated centrally in the harbor of Hamburg, Germany is a classic and cozy restaurant called Heimathafen. From the exterior the restaurant appears unassuming yet inviting, plenty of patrons sat enjoying their food and drink. Despite traveling with a larger group–6 to be exact– we were seated almost immediately. A bright and cheery woman led us to our table and introduced herself as Heike. Absent was any sense of annoyance or irritation for our lack of knowledge in the German language. She quickly provided us with menus in both English and German, as the english version did not include the drink and dessert menu, nor any prices. Dim lighting and painted red walls offered a warm and comfortable atmosphere, especially paired with the cushioned booth that hugged the corner where we were seated. “Wonderful choice”, Heike remarked with an approving nod and smile upon my request for an Aperol Spritz. The value of the drink was only beaten by its flavor, proving to be an amazing start to the meal. I don’t know of anywhere else, in Europe or the United State, where one could find a drink so delicious for less than $7 USD. The rosy drink allowed me to punctuate my meal with small sips, swapping to try each other's drinks, and great conversation.

The menu itself had plenty of choices for vegetarians and carnivores alike, while not overwhelming you with options. I settled quickly on a classic German dish I have never tried before– saftiges schweineschnitzel– which translates to “juicy pork schnitzel”. And juicy it was. The thin pounded pork held reams of flavor encased in a delicately crisp breaded crust. A lemon wedge provided the perfect amount of acidity when juiced over the fillet. While this delectable piece of meat could stand perfectly well on its own, a nicely sized dish of creamy mushroom sauce ushered in another world of flavor and texture. The slivers of potato accompanying the schnitzel were seasoned to perfection and exactly the right amount of crisp on the exterior with a smooth, buttery inside. The food was delicious, and after a long day of exploring the city hit just the right spot. It was almost too easy to join the clean plate club. All the dishes came out quickly and were obviously crafted with care and skill.

Between the welcoming and comfortable atmosphere, fantastic service, and tasty eats, it's difficult to find a flaw in this classic restaurant. If you ever find yourself in the heart of Hamburg, I cannot recommend...

Rude service, tiny schnitzel, and zero respect for guests!

We visited Gasthaus-Heimathafen 25/07-2025, and right from the start, the experience was disappointing. While placing our order, the waitress shushed us and rushed us, despite the restaurant being far from full. Not exactly a warm welcome.

When the food arrived, we were genuinely surprised at the size of the Wiener schnitzel. It barely covered half the plate. For the price, you'd expect something more generous, especially for a dish that's usually known for its size.

The worst part was when we went to pay. We chose not to leave a tip, and the same waitress reacted with visible irritation. She threw our payment card across the table, tossed the receipt in our face, and walked away in a sulk. Completely unacceptable behavior.

Overall, a really poor experience. We won't be coming back and can't recommend this place to others. A word of advice to the restaurant: fix your service attitude, respect your guests, and deliver food that matches the price...

Talking about a Master Class in Restaurant running. My son and I went there yesterday for Dinner. It was a busy evening, Saturday evening no less. Despite having no reservation we had a table in under 10 minutes. The server came less than 5 minutes later to take our drink order. Right after that a group of no less than 20 people arrived and was seating right next to us. I though "this is not going to end well". But boy was I wrong, the server called in re-inforcements and our food order was taken in between the order s from the group. In the hour we were there those guys never missed a beat, never missed an additional order or messed up one. Half way through my meal I ordered another beer and that was delivered within 5 minutes while another 6 orders from the other table rolled in. Absolutely amazing. Our food came within 15 minutes and it was delicious. The interiour of the place wasn't that impressive but if you ever want to see how to handle crowds during crunch time I highly...

This restaurant is located near by the harbor area and 30 min away from the Hamburg central station. My girlfriend and I visited for lunch during the Euro2024. The food was okay. We ordered fried eggs with potatoes and a classic burger. The eggs were very good - they come with baked potatoes, crispy crumbs of bacon and a small salad. The burger was average (not great, not terrible). Despite the meat was good, the rest of the burger didn't add any extra value to the experience. In my opinion a better bread bun or cheese could make a big difference (just my personal opinion though). Portion sizes are big. With the service we had a bittersweet experience. We were attended by two different persons. One was super nice and attentive, the other one was close to rude. Despite this, they were efficient, orders were delivered timely, and you can pay with card. Overall, it was an okay experience and it is not expensive (considering the average price you pay in the city).

Solid German Style restaurant. Prices are average and food is pretty good. I had the Scholle (flounder) with pan fried potatoes, it was good. A bit boney so if you are not used to fileting a fish, go with the Backfisch. That's what my wife had, she enjoyed it a lot. I'm not a fan of potato salad but I tried the fish and it was perfect. Disappointing was the dessert, the Spaghetti Eis. Being from Mannheim where the Spaghetti Eis was invented, this premade too frozen version didn't even come close to a real Spaghetti Eis. Definitely try something else. Service was very friendly and for German standards fairly prompt. Good place to try once when in town.

We had a big group of over 30 people, so finding a pub that could accommodate us was a real challenge. And restaurants often have strict rules about group bookings, like limited menus, upfront payments, and cancellation fees. But Gasthaus Heimathafen was a total game-changer. The staff was super friendly and we made all the arrangements through email. And the evening was an absolute blast! The atmosphere was great, the drinks were delicious, and the food options were fantastic. From classic burgers to local specialties like Labskaus, there was something for everyone. I highly recommend checking it out, even if you’re not a 3 football teams 😊
