Full of anticipation, we went to this restaurant on the recommendation of a good wine friend. They have an excellent wine list here. With nice weather, we had a table on the terrace. Knowing that this restaurant offers great wines, we treated ourselves to a few fine bottles.
We started with shared appetizers â vegetables, cured hams, and 24-month aged Parmesan cheese. Everything was delicious. We continued with tagliatelle with truffle and a ribeye. The pasta was wonderful; the ribeye was decent.
We started with a Castellberg Chardonnay 2019 â a lovely, full-bodied German Chardonnay. A great start. We followed it with a Cabernet Sauvignon from Robert Mondavi 2012 â not something you often see on a wine list. Unfortunately, the wine was corked, which was confirmed by our host, Jana.
We had to choose a younger alternative because she didnât want to take responsibility if another bottle turned out to be corked as well. We didnât quite understand that, but okay â we opted for a Campo di Tenaglia 2014, which was lovely. (And also older than 10 yrs?)
But then came the unpleasant surprise. It turns out that the wine list states (in small print) that if you choose a wine over ten years old and itâs corked, the risk is yours and the cost will be charged to you. We were stunned â of course, we hadnât read the fine print. This was also not mentioned to us when ordering.
We donât like writing negative reviews, but this should be said in our opinion, the risk of a corked wine is part of the cost structure â itâs a professional risk. And as a restaurant with such an impressive wine list, this is simply not acceptable. Moreover, no guest enjoys this kind of experience. Itâs certainly not something that builds customer loyalty. Something to think about I would say.
Jana was âvery kindâ and offered to charge us only 50% for the corked bottle. Completely unacceptable, of course. After an unpleasant discussion when settling the bill, they eventually removed the bottle from the bill following our arguments.
Weâve visited many restaurants and drunk a lot of wine in our lives. We definitely recommend this restaurant â the food is good. But do not choose expensive or old wines, because if they are corked theyâll simply end up on your bill! We wonât be...
Read moreWe are interested in wines and therefore deliberately chose the wine bar. Unfortunately, we were very disappointed. There were very few wines available by the glass for a wine bar. The bottle wine list was never offered or handed to us. The descriptions of the wines on the menu were more trendy than informative. When we asked about the wines, we were given no more information than what was on the menu. No additional details about origin, grape composition, etc. When we requested a wine recommendation to accompany our meal, it took two reminders before we received a response, and even then, no explanations were provided. Water at 10 euros per bottle was overpriced. When paying by credit card, we as customers were expected to cover the fees on top of the tip. The food was good, but there was no evident passion or expertise for wine. If we hadnât read beforehand that it was a wine bar, we wouldnât have...
