This Sunday, we had a chance to visit "Spice Route" and experience the authentic Keralite/Malayali Cuisine. We loved every food item we tried here, and would love to visit often, with more friends.
We Friends, a total of 4 Adults, 1 kid - are all natives of Udupi/Mangalore (Coastal Karnataka) and we usually have higher expectations, stricter criteria to be pleased with authentic food. Spice Route lived upto its name, serving us much needed, spiced and well prepared dishes.
First of all, we were assigned spacious seats accomodating all of us. The Waitresses greeted us with lot of warmth and shared the menu, read out the specials and recommended us few of starters.
What followed later was just a mélange of spices, Sea-Food/Chicken/Egg, Rice, and thick gravies allowing us to relish every morsel plattered.
Started with much pouplar 'Meen Pollichathu', which is a distinct Malayali Spiced Fish fry served inside a Banana leaf. This fry is prepared with lot of ingredients and we enjoyed the rich blend of pepper, coconut oil and other spices which came in layers. The aroma and flavor given by Banana leaf reminded me beautiful coastal Kerala.
We then pampered ourselves with tasty Prawns roast done to perfection. The crunchy prawns soaked in spice paste and roasted in oil was nothing but divine. Please try combination of Prawns roast with Kerala Porotta. At Spice Route, I got unique and amazing experience of tasting the Mallu Parotta (as we say in Udupi) The Parottas were not thick but crunchy enough, giving right kicks to our taste buds.
Before Spice Route, we had never tasted 'Appam', as we had thought it is like a 'Dosa'. For our surprise, the Appam was just out-of-the-world which tasted par excelence, in combination with 'Kerala Chicken Curry'.
For the main course, we enjoyed having worth-the-hype 'Malbari Chicken Dum Biriyani' containing flavored and aromated spiced Rice, Boiled Eggs, fried onions and generous servings of chicken pieces. God knows what kind of the rice is used here, it smells so fresh, and reminded me of best of the Biriyanis I had in restaurants, in Kerala. The 'Dum' is so exquisite and rich, I am drooling now writing the review, on a Monday morning. A warning note here please, the chicken Biriyani is so soothing and tasty, I followed it with a strong 'Tea', as I had to be alert and drive back. Spice Route for sure is my new Biriyani adda (my fav food is Chicken Biriyani).
At the end, one of my friends suggested to try 'Coconut Cloud 9' which is coconut Milk Pudding, sweetened with Caramel Cream and coconut crumbs sprinkled, all in all infused with eact other, presented in a small cup. We loved the sweet very much and got another serving as well. This ended our beautiful evening at Spice Route.
A Great Ambience, customer oriented service, restaurant well connected with public transport, and out-of-the-world Malayali Food on a weekend. Also the restaurant owners are so humble and they come to you and have a nice chat, which is missing in Munich Restaurant circuit. This is what we need, we long and Spice Route delivers everything.

P.S. : In our next visit, we are going to try more of Appams, Pazham Poli, and Chetti Choru We were focussed so much on eating, munching and forgot to take...
Read moreI visited this place based on strong recommendations from friends, but unfortunately, my experience was quite disappointing We were two and ordered Kerala Chicken Fry, Pazhampori Beef Combo, Malabar Chicken Biriyani, and two Lemon Sodas. I was particularly excited about the Pazhampori Beef combo as I had never tried this combo before. It was the first item to arrive, and I must say, it tasted great! However, when we requested an extra plate and spoon to share, they were never brought. We ended up eating from a single plate.
The Chicken Fry arrived next, and once again, we asked for an extra plate, only to be ignored. Meanwhile, we noticed larger groups at other tables making repeated requests and receiving prompt service, so perhaps being just two people contributed to us being overlooked.
The Malabar Chicken Biriyani took an additional 15 minutes to arrive, and by the time the extra plates and spoons were finally provided, our food had gone cold. While the biriyani rice was decent, I wasn’t a fan of the masala as I prefer a milder flavor for Malabar-style biriyani. The drinks, which should have come early, only arrived after persistent reminders. We also ordered Kerala Porotta, but it never came. Despite asking multiple times, we eventually gave up. To make matters worse, the porotta was mistakenly added to our bill, though they removed it when we pointed it out.
In summary: The Pazhampori Beef was excellent, and the Chicken Fry was decent, but service issues overshadowed the food quality. The staff seemed overwhelmed and inexperienced, likely due to the weekend rush.
Suggestions: Visit during a weekday or non-peak hours for better service. Larger groups may get better attention, but be prepared to repeatedly follow up with the servers. I wouldn’t recommend this place for hosting colleagues as the disorganized service can ruin the experience. With close friends, you might be able to overlook the delays, but overall, this was not the dining experience I...
Read moreThis restaurant opened in the middle of last month and we have already visited it twice. We have tried pazhampori (banana fry) with beef roast, chicken biriyani, appam, chicken stew, chicken fry, and paal kappa (tapioca with coconut milk) with fish curry. I loved all of them. My favorites are chicken biriyani and beef roast. All are authentic recipes from Kerala (a South Indian state). So the spice level is quite higher compared to other typical Indian restaurants in Munich. For the people who don't wanna try spicy dishes I would recommend Appam and stew combo.
Among the beverages definitely try the milk tea and sulaimani (kind of a herbal tea).
Toilet is available. When I visited for the first time, the pipe was a bit old, but when I visited it last time, they replaced it with a new one. Kudos to that! There are steps to the door, hence not wheelchair friendly. There are coat hangers for the winter. As of now, the restaurant is open on Thursday evening, Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday (with weekend special menus). Pazhampori and paal kappa with fish were weekend specials.
The staff is super friendly. They speak English, German and Malayalam. They ask for our feedback before the bill settlement.
Street parking is available, but depends on the free slots. The bikes can be parked nearby.
Update: we visited today for the Onasadya (a Kerala traditional feast). It was worth every penny. They served the full Sadhya with 2 types of Payasam (a dessert) and 4 curries (couldn't include them on the photos). It was so good that we asked for more serves. The Sadya is fully vegetarian and served on a banana leaf. So be ready with the authentic Kerala cuisine. For sure, you have to book earlier to get slots. Our time slot was...
