My husband & I'd found this hidden gem of a German themed restaurant while house hunting & am SO GLAD that we did! From their "tongue in cheek" road sign to draw in the crowds, to their friendly & welcoming staff that speak English (which was such a total relief to us.).

To start, I got Big Emma's Cocktail & our waitress suggested a Crystal Wizner German beer for my husband to try. Which we'd both enjoyed. Mine was sweet & strong, after a couple of sips I'd felt a little buzz. It'd also tasted like a "Bahama Mama" with the coconut liquor & fruit juice & Wayne said that his beer was pretty smooth without the bite that the darker lagers have. Not to mention that he'd said that it was WAY BETTER than the "overpowering" wheat tasting bottled beer that he'd gotten at the front desk of the hotel that we're staying at, when we'd first arrived.

But, once our food arrived there was no more time to mess around & get to getting our grub on! We could smell the delicious meats BEFORE the server even turned the corner! It'd smelled SO GOOD & the meats were still sizzling as they brought them to our table! Wayne, had ordered the 17oz. Grilled Rumpsteak in Herb Butter & OMG! The top was nicely crisped for that AMAZING crunch as you bite into a slice of juicy, tender ONOLICIOUSLY prepared cut of beef! I was jealous that I hadn't ordered that instead!

But, the Big Emma's Mixed Grill of SUCCULENT cuts of Beef, boneless & skinless Chicken Breast (filled with cuts of fresh veggies) & Pork wasn't bad at all, either! We'd shared cuts with each other & STILL had leftovers to take home. But, I can't forget to mention our sides that'd completed our meals: an order of German seasoned Fried Potatoes & Onions served with Big Emma's Special dip & an order of buttery, nicely seasoned Spaetzle with Peppered Gravy drizzled on it! Back in Hawai'i we have a saying when food is SO GOOD, "Bruh! Da Kine Brok' da Mout'! Dat one!" & these DEFINITELY EARNED that title. They could've been a main entree on their own, they were THAT GOOD!

But, because my husband spoils me & allows me to punish the 2 of us by overeating WAY BEYOND our limits! We're in an authentic German restaurant so for dessert, I'd ordered an Apple Strudel with Vanilla Ice Cream & Whipped Cream to share. "When in Rome, do like the Romans"...I SERIOUSLY should've asked for their "rollout service" because after eating all of their AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS food, I'd NEEDED to be rolled out somewhere for a nap!

It'll be a little while before we go back...still new to the area, so we're kind of homeless. But, once we get settled, we'll DEFINITELY go back & check out the rest of Big...

Waitress was rude - expected everyone to yell their orders across the table and huffed and puffed when she couldn't hear me. Seemed annoyed that we couldn't perfectly order/pronounce the German named items and I feel a restaurant that has a large English speaking customer base would be be more understanding to patrons that are still learning a new language. The salad bar was lacking, the actual bin with the lettuce had a handful of salad and so only some of our party actually got a plate. Entree portions are stupidly large and either super salty or super sweet. I ended up having mild food poisoning the following evening so all the leftovers got tossed. The only redeeming thing about this place is their cocktails and mixed drinks were delicious. If I had to return, I'll stick to the drinks.

EDIT: I would give this place zero stars based on the owners attitude alone. Insults people in their responses and is over all rude. Avoid at all cost.

Response to owner: I shouldn't have to tell you or your employees to do their jobs and keep the salad bar refreshed. The taste is my own personal opinion but food poisoning was hours later. Am I supposed to assume I would get sick while in the restaurant? Maybe hire people who don't have an attitude? But from your reply seems like it may be a requirement to be a jerk to work there. Maybe spend less time trolling your reviews and getting upset at people's valid concerns and use them to improve your restaurant, just...

We visited for the first time big Emma. The outside looked promising and inviting. Interior is nice too. We got seated quickly in a calmer area which was great with having 2 wild kids. The restaurant robot brought our daughter 2 small toys what we really appreciated and it was definitely a nice touch.

Unfortunately that's about it regarding the positive feedback. We ordered a big salad with meat, a wiener schnitzel with spaetzle and kids chicken nuggets. Unfortunately most of the food was a disappointment. The Schnitzel, which is advertised as fresh, was definitely NOT a freshly made schnitzel. That was something from a freezer which got tossed in the oil. Also it was overly spiced with pepper what was just unpleasant.

My daughters chicken nuggets were stale, almost impossible to cut due to being to hard. For me, it seems those have been something from a day before. What a shame...due that is supposed to be homemade regarding the menu. She loves eating chicken but didn't touch those after 1 bite. We had to feed her at home afterwards because she was so hungry.

How can you advertise that it's homemade and freshly made when in reality it's just deep fried...

There is quite a lot of American love for this restaurant, and the setting is quite lovely, but some warnings for our fellow American customers: 1) For some reason, the host seemed quite perturbed that we were not German and sat us in a warm corner of the restaurant on a hot, summer day. This could have been our fault for not asking to sit outside when we first arrived. 2) Our server was very friendly, but just doubled our order when we asked to split it (no sharing allowed we later found out). 3) Our server encouraged us to leave 15-20% tip. Lol! Tipping that much isn’t customary in Germany. 10% would be considered generous for excellent service. 4) Don’t order the “craft beer”. We are spoiled in the U.S. and it will disappoint you. Just stick to the brotbier. Overall, bring a large appetite and order the German items, especially spätzle and schnitzel. Don’t overtip or you’ll easily pay $200 for a family of 5. There are so many other great places to eat near base that won’t break the bank. I don’t anticipate returning.

A coworker said if was in the area I had to go here. It was worth it. The food was so good. When we ordered we were informed of a salid bar that was open which is nice. There was a lot of food and I couldn't bare to leave any of it. The drink selection is vast and it's well worth trying a variety. I will say it's not for everyone some of the drinks did not sit right on the American pallet. The service was quick and friendly, joking around and talking with us. We went on a Thursday which was live country music night. It was interesting hearing the renditions of various country songs played at a slightly different cadence with minor lyrical changes. Not everyone in my group was thrilled about those changes though if you aren't familiar with the songs you wouldn't notice. Overall, I would highly recommend going here. I hope to return, if I'm ever the area again. Note: Just remember for card users, the 1st computer just tells you what you're paying for and the 2nd computer is where you input your payment method.
