Gaststätte Echostüberl — Restaurant in Schönau am Königssee

The overall atmosphere of the restaurant was pleasant — the interior design is charming and cozy, and the ambiance is warm and inviting. The food was quite good as well: flavorful, generous in portion size, and reasonably priced, which makes it a great value overall.

However, there were two things that left me confused.

First, the restaurant offers a “family plate” that, according to the menu, is only available to families with children. I’m not sure whether this is due to the portion size or for some other reason, but as adult friends dining together, we were told we could not order it. I found this restriction puzzling, and it would be helpful to know the purpose behind it.

Second, we had an uncomfortable experience with one of the staff members. She asked twice whether we were ready to order. The second time, when we still needed a little more time to decide, she pursed her lips and walked away without offering any assistance. When we eventually tried to order the family plate, we were told it wasn’t available to us. We then needed a few more minutes to make a new decision, but she returned shortly and informed us we had only five minutes left to place our order because the kitchen was closing. We visited this restaurant for lunch in July during our trip. The atmosphere was very nice and one of the younger male staff members was extremely helpful, recommending dishes and providing good service. The food itself was also quite decent.

However, our positive impression was completely overshadowed when we were about to leave. While I was at the table settling the bill, my young daughter was walking toward the front of the restaurant. At that moment, an older male staff member,acted in an extremely inappropriate and shocking manner. He deliberately pushed my daughter aside, seemingly because she was in his way.

There was absolutely no need for such rude behavior toward a child. Physical contact of any kind is already unacceptable, but this went beyond that,it felt aggressive, almost like an act of physical harm, over something so minor and unintentional.

This was the place with the highest rating in the area but I honestly don’t understand why. The worst attitude and the rudest waitress I have ever experienced. We had a group of 9 people including 2 kids and we were refused the table inside with the argument that all tables are reserved. We were seated outside in a quite cold weather. We asked to switch on the heater above us on the wall, but that was also not possible, with no other reason than just not possible. When we were leaving 40 min laters all tables inside were still free, as you can see on the photo. On top of that I could not pay for my dish by card because is was below 10 eur, which of course no one warned upfront, and was very uncomfortable as I did not have cash with me. I can’t comment on the food as with this level of anti-service all the rest faded away....
