Sukhna Lake in Chandigarh, India, is a reservoir at the foothills (Shivalik hills) of the Himalayas. This 3 km² rainfed lake was created in 1958 by damming the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream coming down from the Shivalik Hills. Originally the seasonal flow entered the lake directly causing heavy siltation. To check the inflow of silt, 25.42 km² of land was acquired in the catchment area and put under vegetation. In 1974, the Choe was diverted and made to bypass the lake completely, the lake being fed by three siltation pots, minimising the entry of silt into the lake itself. The lake was created by Le Corbusier and the Chief Engineer P L Verma. To preserve its tranquility, Corbusier insisted on two things: that it be forbidden for motor boats to circulate in the water, and for vehicular traffic to be prohibited on top of the dam (promenade). The lake is fringed by a golf course to the south, and Nek Chand's famous Rock Garden of Chandigarh to its west. Earlier some crocodiles were also found in this lake. Earlier it was known as Chakraborty Lake after Birendra Narayan Chakraborty, Governer of Haryana - 1967 to 1976. The lake is facing serious issues like weed overgrowth,[5] catchment adequacy[6] and silting[7]that are significantly shrinking its size and depth. A project team, under Parasu Ram Mishra, was deployed to address the issue and take remedial measures, which halted the sedimentation, for a while.[8] Additionally, it has become the subject of litigation between Chandigarh and Punjab.[9][10] Silting has taken its toll and the volume of the lake has been reduced to 56% of its original. The lake is shrinking rapidly due to siltation and lack of inflow.[11]It was initially hoped that the work of desilting could be undertaken in summers at a war footing and dry dredging could be undertaken at a fraction of cost to save Sukhna in the coming years. Unfortunately, the ground realities seem to be different. Due to heavy rain in August and September Sukhna was filled up again and flood gates were being opened

A beautiful man made lake in Chandigarh,is the crown of the beautiful city.A best place in city to spend your memorable time with your near and dears at this place.one can enjoy boating, camal ride, children amusement park with swings for kids.A self service restaurant named Mermaid, with lots if desserts, shakes south indian dishes, Chinese dishes to satisfy your hunger. However the quality of food and its preparation is not good as per standard..The adminstration must handle this main problem faced by large number of tourists.Lots of paid parking, rehriwalas, soft drinks and more street foods to enjoy.Boating is also costly you have to pay₹400/per boat for one hour and for solar powered boat they charged₹300/for single person which is quite expensive.overall a best and beautiful spot in Chandigarh for morning and evening walkers, joggers and bird watchers.Buddha park adjoining Sukhna lake is a good to visit.A peepal tree which is 150years old is th main attraction and national Heritage is there to see.Lots of flowering plants, bushes and ornamental trees stood to welcome you.. Sukhna lake is the main attraction of Chandigarh, the city beautiful..!

Even if some one wants to criticize Chandigarh, they won't be able to do it because it's sparkling cleanliness is every where. I was beyond impressed to look at the city while i was travelling to Sukhna. Beautiful trees, organised dustbins, even dead leaves were organised. If you ask me where is the educated lot in India, it's in Chandigarh doing their best to keep their city clean and pollution free. Chandigarh has made me realise people can live like humans after all. Even the animals of Chandigarh were organised. So, beginning with Sukhna, what beauty! First public site in my life to not charge a fee even if it's 10 bucks. From the higher class to the lower class, every one is welcomed to enter. This is not even the best part, the best part being the discipline in work put by the workers, thoroughly cleaning, brooming, I would definitely suggest you to take a water bottle along with you so that you don't dry up your throat by walking because sukhna is massive. Also, be respectful towards it's vegetation. Don't pluck flowers for selfies and stuff. It takes seconds to ruin a beautiful place and years to build a new one.

Location - 1sector in Chandigarh Right time to visit - Monday to Friday Timing - 5am to 10pm Sunrise - around 6:30am in summer Entry - Free Because Saturday or Sunday so crowded. Very nice place. This is a very beautiful place situated in Chandigarh near rock garden Boating is a good experience. They are rated 250 for 30 minutes for 2 pedal . Boating is the main attraction, and there are various alternatives available, including paddle, row, and shikhara boats. The view is spectacular, and there are various additional activities available, such as rock climbing and mini swings, to help you unwind If you are tensed, frustated, dejected - I advise you to try the silence present at lake on any afternoon. Maybe, you will not feel tensed, frustrated after staying their for some time In the evening large crowd comes to this place. I like that too. People walking, capturing photos of the lake and enjoying Chandigarh. People enjoy boating at this time. Parents with their kids eating ice-cream and sitting on the periphery of lake

This is the place I've visited the most in last one year.Fancy decor and really good ambience, my family loves it, and that's solely because of the indian-ness it has in the taste of its food; full of strong Indian spices. Most of the indian dishes on their menu are really delicious, especially the North Indian ones. You order any of their thaali (filled with north indian dishes) as per your preferences and you're definately good to go. Even the ones from south are given a north touch and yes it's not at all surprising; tastes good! Now, what you should definately skip, is all other kinds of cuisine that they have, be it chinese or italian, nothing works. Red sauce pasta, to some extent is decent, but other things like pizza or their beverages (extremely disappointing) are really poor in terms of taste. Overall, if you love North Indian food, then this is a decent place to be at! P.s. I've not tried any of their sweets yet!
