Proper Greek unrecontructed taverna, excellent fresh food, small bill.
Ate there today Oct 1st with my wife on the very last days of the season.
The chicken skewer was fresh, tender, grilled to perfection and plentiful (3 skewers). Even the tomatoes as an accompaniment were ripe and delicious. For 11€, how do they do it?
The portion of bouyourdi (a hearty dish of cheese, tomato and some serious chili) they served me was enough to feed a man. And his horse. And his manservant. It was delicious; while not recommended by the British Federation of Heart Surgeons, but you live only once and this is a nice way to go.
The Alfa beer on tap was sub-Siberian temperature, you have time to sip it slowly before it goes warm. Bread served with our meal was warm and lovely.
My wife enjoyed her starter of tarama, which was enough to feed her.
A totally empirical survey ran during the last ten and this last lunch at Konaki days goes to confirm our initial findings: a proper taverna must have dark wood decor (Spanish Inquisition style) and look unencumbered by questions of design. These guys concentrate on food, quality and service.
Conversely, most modern eateries around (white walls, blue post-modern character fonts, names that are taken from the Aeneid) tend to be more expensive and nowhere near as good.
Just one remark for Konaki: under no circumstance should you order the rosé by the glass. This goes for most tavernas, but the carefree abandon they use to select by the glass wines is frightening. Stick to beer.
Bar from this, this is surely one of the greatest place to eat in...

We ordered gyros with pork for kids which should cost 4 EUR in the menu, but they charged us 9 (!) for each. We didn’t ask for bread, but they put it on table and charged 4 EUR for each plate Bottle of cold water cost us 4 EUR too Food.. 3 of 5, calmar was very dry, pasta - could be better. Red house wine ok (5 EUR for 0.5l) Thanks for serving, but never again. You will pay 50% more than expected...
