Let's get straight to it. Marathonitis Tavern is something special. Αn unassuming gem tucked away in in a basement, but don't let that fool you. Inside, it's all about the authentic old-school Greek charming tavern vibe. Picture this: big wine barrels lining a wall (they make their own wine, and it's great). The food? Solid. Those lamb chops? A must-try. Everything on the menu is spot on. And the prices? You'll be doing a double-take at the bill, in a good way. Now, the best part – the atmosphere. It's like you're right in the heart of Greece. The live music (not on weekends) is a fantastic mix of classic Greek songs. And the crowd – mainly university students – keeps the energy up. In short, if you're looking for a place that's not just about good food but also about a real Greek experience, Marathonitis is your spot. For food, atmosphere, music, service, and value, it's a resounding yes from me. Highly recommended for anyone looking to dive into the real deal of Greek tavern culture.

As of August 4 2024 this establishment is closed, was not open on a Sunday around 3:00 PM and there is a sign on the door in Greek that says “wish a good summer we will be back early October”. We spent 13 euro on taxi ride to learn this. As usual Google Maps will not accept my attempt to edit the hours to indicate closure. The owner needs to do that. See photo (translated) showing sign posted in door, do not waste time and money trying to go here for now. I am giving one star because the owner did not have hours updated on Google Maps costing me an hour and 13 euros.

Tiny tavern in the basement. Was greeted by a young lad. Traditional greek food not the high street gyros. One of the best foods I've had. Had tzatziki, grilled feta, chilli cheese dip. Was recommended sheep chops and were not disappointed at all. Lamb chops were ok. The kids were well happy with chicken chops. Zuzzchini balls were good too. Their house wine was a hit. We ate a lot and finished everything. Finished the meal with their complementary dessert. The entire meal was top notch and affordable. More locals than foreigners. They do have live music later at night.

Absolutely loved this place! From the moment we walked in, we were welcomed like family. The atmosphere is warm and cozy!

The food Incredible. Every dish tasted homemade, full of flavor and clearly made with love. The grilled meats were perfectly seasoned, star of the show the lamb chops and aubergine saganaki!

What really sets this restaurant apart is the people. The staff were not only attentive but truly passionate about what they do. You can feel the pride they take in sharing their culture and hospitality.

If you’re in Athens and want an authentic experience with delicious food and a real family vibe, this is the...

We went on Wednesday night 3 of us. We were lucky to get a table there it was fully packed, while ordering the server told me to order different items than I was planning to order, at first I thought he is trying to sell me what ever they need to push, but when I tried what he suggested and what I ordered I understood that he was helping me, the sheep chops and the beef liver on charcoal was something else superb, thank you for your hospitality and love, a place I would visit everytime I come to Athens. Do yourself a favor and dine like Greeks do. House wine and great atmosphere with live...
