Came for a dinner after a few years of absence. We've been there numerous times and knew Giorges well. Seems that he is no longer running the taverna. All entourage remained: you walk into the kitchen, see the dishes in the pots which are opened for you one after another, the veranda is the same, and the service is good even on busy evenings. Unfortunately, the food quality is not what it used to be. We had stuffed zucchini flowers and wine leaves, rabbit in tomatoes and sardines. The rabbit was good. The stuffed flowers and leaves were "tired" and dull. The sardines were prepared well, but they were soaked in olive oil, and I barely felt their taste. They usually bring some watermelon with the bill. For us, they brought a piece of cake with the bill (while none of us eats cakes). The prices are ok. The name is well established over years. So the place is popular. We hope the current management will improve the quality to what it used to be (and currently is in several...
Read moreWe LOVE Dionyssos!
We like authentic food wherever we travel, and Dionyssos was one of the first Cretan Restaurants we ever discovered where we could find truly authentic fare. There is a menu for those that want to choose a well known favourite dish, but the best thing about the place is when you sit down and are then invited back into the kitchen to see what special dishes of the day have been cooking! (Not many kitchens in the UK would be happy about this!) Invariably, there might be 7 or 8 of these dishes and almost always they incorporate ingredients gathered from the family farm that day. The whole place is run by the same extended family who are simply some of the friendliest folk we have ever encountered and who we've become incredibly fond of! As with most Cretans, their views on hospitality are legendary, so beware the copious amounts of Raki that are shared and enjoyed together at the end of every meal. We can't wait to return in a few...
Read moreIf you are looking for a 100% authentic Greek restaurant, this is it. You get invited into the kitchen and you get to see all the daily specials, clearly all freshly prepared which I last experienced 30 years ago! I chose some stuffed vine leaves with stuffed zucchini flowers with a dollop of Greek joghurt. Main course was meat balls like I have never tasted before. To die for! And with a light, fluffy consistency in a lemon sauce. Lunch is a quiet time, evenings are super popular it would seem, any reservation later than 6p.m. were not being accepted. I am deducting one star for the rather gruff service which was completely unexpected and a lot of shouting on the phone which I don't think any guest wants to hear, especially when you cannot understand what is going on. Towards the end he cheered up and actually...
