We were expecting to taste more or less the same dishes one can find in every Greek island, but we were surprised by the unique tastes. At our first visit the chef, Mrs Maroula, came to our table and informed us about several distinctive dishes she and her team could prepare for us, thankfully it was early in the evening and the restaurant wasn't yet crowded so she had the chance to talk to us. We were intrigued by her description of the homemade pasta with fresh fish and mushrooms, as we are familiar with eating pasta with lobster but never had tried it with fish. When the dish arrived it was beautifuly decorated and by the first bite we were amazed by the taste. We had never thought of combining mushrooms with fish, and the taste of earth and sea was unique. We visited the restaurant for dinner the following evening, wanting to taste more, and we ordered fish soup and seafood saganaki. The fish soup was not like any other fish soup we had ever tasted, as it was made to resemble a traditional Greek Easter soup which is usually made with lamb. Again we were happily surprised by the imaginative combinations of ingredients and tastes, smiling with delight at every bite. When the seafood saganaki came to our table, we noticed it wasn't made with the typical red sauce as most saganakis' are, but it had white sauce, which we had never thought of before. The seafood was delicious, but the sauce was even more, and although we were already stuffed by the starters and the fish soup, we sipped every drop of the sauce in the plate. After that, we decided to visit the restaurant for the third (and unfortunately last) evening at Astypalaia, this time having preordered homemade stuffed pasta. That dish was an ode to simplicity, very few ingredients but yet marvelously tasteful. The pasta was immaculately boiled and the sauce was so light that it allowed us to taste the stuffing of the pasta. We also had bruschettas with fish, made by the Italian chef also working in the restaurant, which were very tasteful.
During all three visits the staff of the restaurant was very attentive, friendly and efficient, and ready to answer any questions regarding the dishes. As for the prices, if this restaurant was in Athens, then the prices would be at least double, so we are thankful we had the chance to taste such unique dishes at very reasonable prices.
All in all, even if that restaurant was not at a very central point but at the other side of island, it would be a very good reason to travel there.
Thank you Mrs Maroula and team for giving us such pleasurable...
Read moreSatisfactory execution of Greek dishes. All dishes, sides and salads were tasty and did not disappoint. However, the service seems to be suffering, either not as professional as it should be or too slow. The atmosphere was ideal, there was even a small band playing traditional rebetiko, which was nice. Of course the island's central walkroad is mainly to blame as it's quite idyllic.
From the dishes we had I especially like the "magiritsa with petropsara", an alternate take on a traditional Greek dish, very well executed. The local hand made pasta (makarounes) was tasty but needed to be al dente. Fava was really good and the little goat with local pasta potion was generous, satisfactory but nothing into the wow-zone.
Overall, I would eat again here, Service seems to be suffering all over the island of Astypalaia, so it's not that this factor would tip the balance. The prices in Astypalaia seem to be fairly managed, I would say that for the same money you eat better in the island peak season than in the capital. Keep in mind that the island is attracting crowds of various origins and buying power.
A final comment, maybe irrelevant or not. Not so professional service seems to be lately a trend across the country, as bad practices from entrepreneurs in the tourist industry over the years have forced a lot of staff to seek work in Mediterranean countries where law is better enforced and respected. Alas, the eternal charm and...
Read moreWhat a marvellous experience to dine here! I’ve done it 3 times and all times it was delicious and fun as The female chef/owner of the place (all her family is at the cuisine with her) is a super star in the island! Clients (lot of locals) come to taste her dishes and to say hi and thank you for the meal!
It is recommended by all locals to pay a visit and taste the local flavours with a twist of modernity. The one thing that locals know AGONI GRAMMI for is for her ravioli stuffed with local cheese and saffron!
The food is DELICIOUS! For the quality and presentation of each dish I did not find it pricey. Ambience is divine, great music and it is a GREAT location to dine indoors as almost all restaurants at Astypalea have no great ambience indoors (because of the weather all restaurants are prepared for exquisite lunch/dinning outdoors!)
My ultimate favourite is her dólmades as they were so fresh and so amazing in quality (served warm), that I could not stop eating them (they serve some 25 small ones in a plate!) Great variety of wine. Good quality! Fish well prepared!
Staff is very very kind. And by far this was the best and fast Service I had in the island, visiting a total of 7 restaurants.
You can NOT miss this dinning experience! Seats outside the main square, among locals, it’s a great experience!
I visited this place 1st week of June...
