Babis Tavern — Restaurant in Municipality of Chalki

I've eaten a lot of hummus in a lot of countries and I don't say this lightly: this was the best hummus I've had. I usually go for hummus mixed with caramelized onions, red peppers, jalapeno - basically something to zhuzh it up - but this hummus had a hint of smoke and phenomenal as is. So much so that we ordered a second round of pitas and had a meal entirely of dips and pitas.

The tzatziki and garlic paste (more of a creamy garlic dip) were both very tasty too and the pitas had a drizzle of olive oil and seasoning, a great combination.

Their soft-serve ice-cream was some of the best I've had in years. Rich and creamy. The chocolate had an almost chocolate mouse taste. Will definitely be back for more.

The staff were really friendly too.

Edit: we were back for more hummus and had the honey feta too. Creamy feta fried in crunchy filo pastry and topped with honey and sesame seeds. Do yourself a favour and get one if you eat here!

My only gripe is that they wouldn't sell me any of their delicious ice-cream. Hopefully if enough people ask they'll start doing so. Otherwise it'll just be me nagging each...

I've been to the restaurant twice. The food is good, the service is normal. I was disappointed with the waiter who took my order. I felt I was in a touristy place and not in a nice Greek Taverna. I ordered Retsina and asked to be served with ice, but no ice was served. The waiter ignored this twice. This is not a problem, but it was a problem to see my order changed. I ordered grilled squid and got fried squid. I think this was related to the ingredients, because the size of the squid was large and squid of that size would be of poor quality and the fried ones would be relatively more flavourful. Knowing this, I ate it without objecting to the result. However, due to an arbitrary change that was not explained to us, we had 3 different types of fried food at lunch. It was quite disturbing.

The food is delicious, you just have to make sure the waiter understands...

The best restaurant, atmosphere and - most of all- team ever!!! After several years spending vacation in Halki, Babis is more than ever the perfect place to go to enjoy a superb meal in a cozy, familiar atmosphere. After several years we probably try any dish from the menu and we were always amazed by the quality of the food and the freshness of the ingredients. The entire offer is delicious but the lobster pasta or the orzo with shirmps or the grilled sea bream are for us the "must eat".
