Food and service was awful. Almost got charged for something we didn’t eat after the waiter said he wouldn’t charge it!
We ordered the pita pizza and the smell and taste was terrible. It was soggy and fell apart with the cheese liquid; It was inedible.
We told the waiter we didn’t like it and he said that we wouldn’t have to pay for it and he came by with a “gift” of 2 mugs…
We decided to try dessert, considering all the 5 star reviews, but it was not as expected. The chocolate cake was definitely just a box recipe (not freshly made- you could tell by the taste and they sell boxes in the front) and the ice cream had clumps of ice in it. The apple pie was decent. We also ordered a “frappe” and that was really bad. I think they blended milk and coffee to make a weird foam - very weird flavor. We didn’t make a big deal and just decided to pay and leave.
The waiter came to charge us over €30. We thought that was weird so we stopped the card from processing and looked it over.
We discovered that he was charging us for the inedible pizza. He said “oh yeah, they said the pita was fine” after he told us earlier that he wouldn’t charge us for that. He also added that he gave us the mugs to make up for it and we would have to pay for the pizza then. After a bit of arguing, and discussing the problems with the pita, he refunded us for it.
The only good thing about this place is the view, as long as you don’t...
Read moreTo round up day 10 of our Round The World travels, we headed to Koukouvaya Cafe for desserts and probably one of the best spots for sunsets in Chania.
Koukouvaya earned its name either from the amazing views (360 degrees views – like an owl) or that there were many owls in the vicinity in the olden days. Inside, you’ll find a beautiful collection of various types of owls as well. There are 2 levels of seatings at Koukouvaya, both have alfresco, outdoor seats which are popular. Once inside, the waiting staff told us that we could sit anywhere we want and as all of the outdoor seats were taken up upstairs, we headed downstairs and there were a couple of “second row” seats outdoors which we promptly took up.
After browsing through the menu, we decided on having the signature Zoumero Chocolate Cake (6.7 euros) and also an iced latte (5.2 euro) but the waiter mistook our order and brought 2 iced latte instead. Turned out to be just nice because the Zoumero was so rich, the latte helped to balance the tastes...

Read moreI popped in for some cake after visiting the Venizelos Graves next door.
It was extremely busy but I managed to find a table inside. I was sat for quite some time before I decided to get a menu for myself, as no one seemed to notice I was there. I witnessed other people coming in and being attended to, but I was virtually ignored. Staff were clearing tables right next to me, but seemed to avoid making eye contact as they rushed past. In the end I literally had to stand up in front of a staff member to get their attention and place my order.
The cake arrived pretty quickly, and I was pleasantly surprised by how huge the portion size was - so big that I couldn’t finish it!
I was going to order another drink, but again had the same issue trying to get the attention of the staff, so I decided to just go up to the counter, pay, and leave.
I should also point out that the cafe was much quieter at this point, but it seems solo customers are not treated with the same level of attention as bigger tables - which is a shame.
Definitely worth visiting but I won’t...
