Quick summary:||Peaceful, relaxing, boutique hotel with rooms facing the sea. Quiet rooms with good air-conditioning. Having the balcony facing the sea is tranquil and relaxing. Breakfast is included (a la carte menu plus a self-serve buffet that included mimosas). Friendly staff and amazing massages by Sotiria.||Detailed review: ||Hotel is good for (In my opinion):|Couples, friends, solo travelers who want to be close to city center without the hustle and bustle. ||Hotel is not good for: |- people who want an active night life (hotel is about a 25 minute walk to city center)|- families with little children (the rooms have showers but no bathtubs)||The photos on hotel website accurately depict the rooms and all rooms face the water. The beds are very comfortable. Air conditioning works good - for the loft there is a thermostat for each floor. Lots of outlets near the beds (2-3 for each side of the bed). Control panel by each side of the bed that allows you to turn on/ off the lights, open/close black out curtains, and even activate "do not disturb." The bathrooms have steam showers that are incredible! (Family loft has two full sized bathrooms, one upstairs and one downstairs)||I stayed in a family loft on the 3rd floor (room 303) which was large however I did ask to look at the Junior Suite and the Deluxe Suite. Both are quite small but good for one or two people. The Junior Suite has a window that opens but no balcony. If your budget allows, opt for a room with a balcony (deluxe suite or larger) so that you can sit outside and watch the beautiful sunsets.||Outstanding service from reception to restaurant to housekeeping with special acknowledgements of Hyacinth, Emi, and Kostas. Spa services by Sotiria were incredible!||Facilities:|- there is a small workout room with a few free weights, one treadmill, one exercise bike (the photo on the hotel website is truly the extent of the room)|- Indoor heated swimming pool and outdoor Jacuzzi (not heated)|- Spa. They have a treatment room in the pool area. No one was at the pool when I had my sessions however I do not know if noise would be a factor during busy season. They offer facials, a few body treatments, and massage. Sotiria provided the treatments and was absolutely amazing (I had the deep tissue massage, moisturizing body scrub and - on a separate day - the hot stone massage). Tip - if you are hiking the Samaria Gorge, book a deep tissue or hot stone massage for the day after the hike - it will help with recovery.||Periplous Restaurant |- seating is outdoors on the water which is beautiful to watch the sunset as you look across at Old town Chania (see picture)|- the hotel recommends having a reservation for dinner especially during high season|- food can be delivered to your room for service charge of €10| - Breakfast (8 am - 11 am) is included with the room price. Self serve buffet with items such as fruit and pastries as well as an a la carte menu with 11 options (such as omelettes, Sfakian pie, and toasted focaccia with smoked salmon)|- lunch is limited (called snack menu) and has salad options, homemade pizza, chicken sandwich, and a tasty shrimp tortilla.|- Dinner was delicious (menu available on the website). I highly recommend the Papardelle with fish, prawns, and mussels.||Good to know:|- Group tours pick up from Halepa Hotel which is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The path is lit and felt safe (even when walking at 545 am to catch the tour bus to Samaria Gorge)|- The hotel is able to assist with booking group tours via Kyriakakis Travel which has options for group tours as well as private tours (you pay the tour company directly)|- If you are leaving the hotel before breakfast starts, notify reception the day before and they will provide you with a breakfast box (this includes your day of departure) |- If you are departing very early in the morning, consider settling your bill the night before (this is what I did based on a negative review I read on trip Advisor). The process was seamless.|- The hotel can arrange a taxi for you. When you are ready to return to the hotel, simply call the hotel and they will arrange for a taxi to pick you up (Chania does not have Uber or Lyft). The taxis allow you to pay with credit cards.|- Walking to Chania Old Town/city center and the lighthouse is easy, you just follow the coast|13 minute walk to Koum Kapi Beach|22 minute walk to Chania Venetian Harbor Guardhouse |25 minute walk along the coast to Chania Old town|30 minute walk to Lighthouse of Chania||- The closest ATM is approximately 1 mile away from the hotel. The hotel accepts credit cards - you can charge spa services and meals to your room however it's nice to have cash for tips and the tour company they use only accepts cash (but there are plenty of online tour options that will let you pay via...

The design quality is outstanding - you can immediately tell how much thought went into both the aesthetic and the choice of materials.||Location|We knew when booking that the hotel wasn’t in the historic centre of Chania. It took us about 30 minutes to walk to the harbour, which was fine on a warm winter day, but I can’t imagine it being a comfortable walk in the summer. That said, the setting itself is magnificent. The hotel is surrounded by old houses, some still derelict, which adds to the charm, but the real highlight is the sea and the rugged coastline. The views - especially at sunset - were absolutely stunning, creating a peaceful and almost magical atmosphere.||The indoor pool was on the smaller side but was heated and never too busy when we used it. There were only three loungers, which might be an issue in high season, but we found it very relaxing.||Room (Presidential Suite)|We booked the Presidential Suite, mainly for the panoramic views, the wood-burning stove, and the jacuzzi. While we knew in advance that it had two bedrooms (despite only two of us travelling), the layout was underwhelming. It was essentially two separate bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms on different levels. The jacuzzi bath was on the lower level, but there was no real living space - just a sofa and a small coffee table. There was no dining table or kitchenette, which we would have expected from a suite of this category. The space didn’t feel particularly ‘presidential’ in terms of comfort or amenities.||Service & Recognition|Given that we had booked the best (and most expensive) room in the hotel, we didn’t expect over-the-top treatment, but small gestures - like a welcome letter or a bottle of local wine - would have been appreciated (we did receive 4 small cookies though). There was no personal welcome from the duty or general manager, and given the hotel’s history and renovation, a short introduction to the property would have been a nice touch.||Restaurant|Breakfast was excellent—attentive service, a good selection of options for a small hotel, and an à la carte menu with freshly prepared dishes.||For dinner, we had the Valentine’s set menu, which featured six courses—five of them seafood. We love seafood, so this wasn’t an issue for us, and the quality and presentation were superb. The service was impeccable, and the sommelier was particularly outstanding - knowledgeable, passionate about local wines, and an absolute pleasure to interact with.||However, when we dined off the regular menu the next night, the experience wasn’t as strong. My grilled octopus was overcooked and rubbery, lacking flavour, while the beef cheeks were excessively salted to the point that I couldn’t finish them. The sauce was rich and aromatic, but the saltiness overwhelmed everything else.||The final bill was also unnecessarily confusing, with multiple items added and then deducted, making it unclear what we had actually been charged for.||Check-Out|This was the most disappointing part of our stay. We had arranged for an early taxi (around 5 AM) to catch a flight. When we arrived at reception, the staff member on duty didn’t speak English and simply showed me a handwritten note listing outstanding balances for the departing guests. We paid, but when I asked for a receipt, he reacted in a way that was both uncomfortable and, for some, might have felt confrontational-pointing at me and speaking in Greek as if I had asked for something completely unreasonable.||After we left, I emailed the hotel requesting the bill, which they sent with an apology. However, the whole situation could have been easily avoided if:|(a) they had informed us the night before that there would be no English-speaking staff in the morning and invited us to settle the bill in advance;|(b) they had simply slipped the bill under our door with a polite note; or|(c) they had prepared the bill so the morning staff member could hand it to us once we had paid.||Overall|We were really excited about this stay, and in many ways, we did enjoy it - particularly the location, the stunning natural and urban surroundings, and the beautifully designed property. However, the Presidential Suite didn’t fully meet expectations, and service - especially at check-out - fell short. Given the high-end positioning of the hotel, a little more attention to detail in these areas would make a...

We stayed four nights at the hotel. I read the good recommendations prior to our staying at Chania and also because of the nice view near the sea we have decided to choose this hotel. The location is not very central but not bad. The view is also very nice, you can hear the sound of the sea from your room if the window is open. However, prior to our staying we asked for a quiet room and we took the standard room because all the rooms with the balcony were already taken (which we preferred). Apparently the rooms with the balcony are more quiet, our room was right above the hotel's restaurant and we couldn't sleep well. All the standard rooms are above the restaurant. Also, there was only a very thin summer blanket at the room, and when I asked for a blanket they brought me another summer blanket, and I was still cold. The next day's evening I talked to the receptionist and asked again for a warmer blanket, she told me that I should have asked for the blanket in the morning since only the Housekeeper knows where she keeps the warmer blankets and she is not working at this hour. The third con thing and for me is the worst- we took a massage the second day at the hotel and my back is still hurting from that massage, as the masseur wasn't gentle at all and I'm usually not suffering from any back pains. A bit awkward that a 5 stars hotel employs a less experienced masseur, cannot supply the basic services 24/7 and accepts the fact that there are rooms in which you can hear the outside noise clearly. The pros' are that the view is nice, the waiters at the restaurant are nice and the food was really good. And the concierge was really helpful parked and brought us the car every time. I think if they would fix and improve a few things the hotel can be really good. For us because all of the things I have mentioned and the excuses we got, it...

The Tanneries Hotel was unlike any other hotel that I have been to. I am astonished at how great this experience was. Let’s go over some key points: First let’s start with the service. Hands down the best service I have ever received in a hotel, ever!! From the front desk girls directing you to the room, to the complimentary VIP parking served by the nicest gentlemen, all the way to the restaurant staff and housekeeping. Everyone had a smile, and everyone was quick and eager to answer your questions and provide you with the best experience possible. Next, the complimentary breakfast. I have been to several hotels with a complimentary breakfast… this hotel has unfortunately set the bar too high for me to ever be satisfied again. A la carte or buffet style, they have it all, while overlooking the sea of Crete. The pictures don’t do it justice as the food is incredible. Of course lunch and dinner at the same hotel restaurant is expensive and we never tried, but I am assuming the experience is the same. The hotel room had the greatest view of the sea. The design is gorgeous, the room is spacious, and a steam shower? Incredible. Location is good- still over 20 minute walk to old town. However, with the free parking, rent a car and stay here to get to your destinations. It is not far out at all. Very peaceful, absolutely zero noise issues. The Tanneries Hotel and Spa has raised the bar, and will make every other hotel experience a disappointment. An absolute must stay when visiting Crete. We will be back!

We had an amazing stay with family. The hotel is incredibly well kept, modern and the team were excellent. The rooms were spacious, extremely clean, modern, amazing sea views and the beds were very comfortable. The food is very good, breakfast is simple but has everything you need. The hotel restaurant Periplous was the nicest dinner we’ve had on the island and there is also another restaraunt next door, Thalassino Ageri which is a lovely relaxed Greek restaurant. The gym is small and has a treadmill, bike, bench press, and some weights too. The hotel is a lovely walk into the old town, there is a rocky beach close by or if you go further the best sandy beach is Nia Chora beach and there’s some great restaurants there. I wouldn’t say it’s very kid friendly and think it’s more suitable to be an adults only hotel - marble furnishings/slippy, no barriers beside the sea water and not much of an area for kids to play, I think the hotel offering as a relaxing modern spa hotel would be better as an adults only location. The staff were amazing, really helpful and the cleaning services were the best I’ve experienced at a hotel.

I highly recommend The Tanneries Hotel and Spa if you’re staying in Chania. It is one of the most beautiful hotels I’ve ever stayed in. The hotel’s architecture design is stunning. It is clean, modern, and very chic. The rooms are fantastic - the views of the Mediterranean are amazing and everything that we needed was provided for (and more, including the steam shower!). The breakfast that was served every morning is delicious. Definitely try the Sfakiani pie - it was my favorite! Also, it is an easy sea-side walk into town of Chania from the hotel. We loved the location as it was not far from town, but in a quieter area where we could really enjoy more privacy. Finally, the staff of the Tanneries is outstanding. We had to re-schedule our trip a few times and each time, they were more than accommodating. When we arrived, they could not have been any nicer and we appreciated the bottle of wine for our first wedding anniversary. Thank you, Sylvia and the entire staff of the Tanneries for such an amazing trip!
