Cretan Family taverna — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

The taverna was recommended by the place we were staying. Also part of their family business. And it has the same brilliant, small, cozy, home-feeling atmosphere. The set-up of the taverna has a welcome open-door mentality. When they prepare a special for the evening you are invited to have a peek in the kitchen and have a taste of whatever superbs they are preparing. The family is doing absolutely everything to make you feel at home and eager to share the taste of their home-cooked food. To the contrary of a lot of other restaurants/tavernas we have visited, you can take all the time that you want enjoying your dinner. Once you finished your meal you do not need to make way for another guest, just enjoy the evening, enjoy your glass of wine or Rakomelo. And if your lucky, you will enjoy a small live performance from the owner (Georgios) and his son (Nikos) playing on their bouzouki. Also when (like us) have visited a couple of times you feel the family bond and communication between the people. Very open, positive and energetic. We have enjoyed a large variety of the menu, appetizers as well as main course and deserts. If you are in the opportunity to visit multiple evenings, try as much as possible. If you feel more for meat or for fish, both are absolutely excellent. They found the perfect balance between adding the spices but maintaining the pure natural taste of the meat or fish!...

We visited this family-run taverna during our stay in late August to early September, and it was absolutely amazing! From the very first time we came, it felt so familiar, as though we had known them for years. The food is the best!! Authentic, fresh, and full of flavor.

We were staying at the family’s hotel just 10 minutes away, and we ended up coming back to the taverna several times during our trip. The food was not only delicious but incredibly affordable, and hotel guests get a 10% discount. The prices and food are so good, though, that we often left a tip!

The owner was so kind and offered me the daily special almost every evening, and I always trusted his recommendations. One evening, we even got to choose our own fish from the kitchen, and he took us straight there to pick it out.

In August 2021 we were honored to get acquainted with the Cretan Family. This year we returned to this wonderful place and coming home never felt better. The variety of the menu is in balance, but also in taste they changed the menu this year and I do have to say that it works out perfectly. Even on some evenings they have “specials”, you are invited to come over to the kitchen and have a look (and taste) of today’s special. Also if you have any questions regarding the plate you would like and alter it a little bit. No Problem! Clearly this family is doing everything in there power to make your evening one to remember for a long time.
