Taverna Eva — Restaurant in Municipality of Chersonissos

This is a quiet, family-friendly restaurant in Malia that feels like a hidden gem I think only the locals know about it. I visited Malia for a week, and this was by far the best food I had during my stay.

The prices are affordable, and the staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming. The chef himself is one of the sweetest, kindest people I’ve ever met, and you can tell he truly cares about his guests. The food is absolutely delicious — we visited several times, and every single dish was amazing.

The restaurant itself is beautiful and has a warm, homely atmosphere. It’s the perfect spot to relax, especially in Malia where the streets can be loud and busy. Here, you can enjoy your meal in peace. I also noticed that there weren’t many tourists, which made the experience feel even more authentic.

The attention to guest satisfaction here is on another level. The staff genuinely take care of you, and they have thought of every little detail to make you comfortable. On the table, you’ll even find wet tissues, toothpicks, and phone wipes small touches that make a big difference. Even the restroom surprised me it had everything you could possibly need, which shows how much they care about their guests’ experience.

Hardly ever I leave reviews, but this taverna really deserves all five plus additional 5 stars. The food is unbelievably tasty and original. You will find all the traditional Greek dishes, some of them with small delicate reinterpretations. You will really appreciate the attention to detail and focus on spotting all the ingredients which make the dishes so tasty and unique. Honestly, after a few holidays on other Greek islands, and this one including a trip around the main Cretan highlights, coming to Malia I did not expect to find such a good place. But they proofed me wrong: this is one of the best places I have ever eaten in Greece. And the staff are very kind and nice. Finally, make sure to try the home made lemonade! It's their own recipe and it's delicious. Maybe small kids may not like it because it's not the usual sugary drink they are used to, but I found it exceptional and exquisite.

Wir wurden herzlich Willkommen geheißen und wurden nach unserer Sprache gefragt, um uns die Speisekarte auf unserer eigenen Sprache zu geben.

Das Ambiente ist wirklich sehr schön und typisch griechisch, dies hat uns wirklich sehr gefallen - dafür gibt es auch die 2 Sterne.

Als Vorspeise bestellten wir das Knoblauchbrot, den Tzatziki sowie den Halloumi, als Hauptgerichte den Chicken-Souvlaki sowie das mit Feta gefüllten Bifteki.

Die Vorspeisen kamen bis auf den Halloumi recht schnell. Dieser kam nämlich gar nicht. Offenbar wurde dieser vergessen bei der Bestellung zu notieren. Das Knoblauchbrot und der Tzatziki waren soweit ok.

Nun hieß es lange auf die Hauptgerichte warten. Wir wollten zwischenzeitlich nach dem Halloumi fragen, es war aber leider niemand ansprechbar. Alle Kellner waren in der Küche, kam doch mal jemand kurz raus um Getränke an Tische zu servieren, wurden wir übersehen und die Person verschwand auch zugleich wieder in der Küche.

Nach relativ langer Zeit kamen dann unsere Hauptgerichte, für die lange Wartedauer entschuldigte sich der junge Kellner von allein. Soweit war alles noch in vertretbar, wenn das Essen super gewesen wäre - war es aber leider nicht.

Grundsätzlich kann man sagen, dass das Essen optisch toll angerichtet wurde, wobei sich mir die Dekoration mit Trockenobst nicht wirklich erschließt. Mein Bifteki war sehr fad, als ob es komplett ohne Gewürze gebraten wurde. Ich habe es gegessen, aber ordentlich mit Salz und Pfeffer nachgewürzt. Das typisch griechische Grillgewürz fehlte komplett. Die Pommes waren bereits kalt und leicht mit Öl vollgesogen - auch hier von Salz keine Spur. Das Chicken Souvlaki war etwas besser als das Bifteki, aber auch diese keine Offenbarung erstklassiger Küche. Auch diese waren zu wenig gewürzt.

Nach dem Essen versuchten wir 20 min lang immer wieder einen Kellner zu erwischen, weil wir bezahlen wollten. Dies gelang uns leider nicht. Meine Freundin ist dann zum bezahlen an die Küche gegangen.
