Restaurant Recommendation: Tzitziki in Souglia, Crete
My dear old bean,
If you find yourself meandering along the sun-kissed shores of Crete, with the wind tousling your hair and a gurgling in your midsection that demands immediate attention, then by all means, make your way to Tzitziki in the charming hamlet of Souglia. It’s a gem of a place where the food is as magnificent as the views over the azure sea, and the staff are nothing short of cherubic angels who float about with smiles that could light up even the gloomiest of days.
Now, about the vittles. I must begin by extolling the virtues of their waffles—crispy, golden delights that have been described as manna from heaven. You might wonder what such a creation is doing in Crete, of all places, but let me assure you that one bite will have you pondering the mysteries of the universe with profound satisfaction.
Their salads are veritable works of art, the likes of which could tempt even the staunchest carnivore to consider the merits of greens. Picture a medley of fresh vegetables, glistening with olive oil, adorned with feta so creamy and tangy that it could persuade Zeus himself to relinquish his throne on Mount Olympus.
Ah, but let us not forget the baba ganoush. If you have ever felt that eggplants deserved a standing ovation, this is the moment. Velvety, smoky, and imbued with a garlicky allure, it is a dish that whispers sweet nothings to your taste buds and leaves you longing for an encore.
The cherry on this glorious sundae is the view—a sweeping panorama of the sea that stretches to infinity, dotted with idyllic beaches where the sands are softer than a lamb’s ear and the waters clearer than Jeeves' well-pressed trousers.
And speaking of Jeeves, the staff at Tzitziki are cut from the same cloth: beautiful and kind, attending to your every whim with a grace and charm that makes one wonder if they were trained at some celestial academy of hospitality. They glide between tables, dispensing plates and pleasantries with equal aplomb, ensuring that your dining experience is nothing short of transcendent.
So, dear reader, when in Crete, do yourself the immense favor of visiting Tzitziki. It’s an oasis of culinary delight and seaside splendor that will leave you with a belly full of joy and a heart content enough to hum a merry tune all the way back to your lodgings.

Read moreWe visited this place in August with my wife and our 2 children. We ordered 2 coffees, 1 omelette and 1 apple pie. As soon as we finished with our food, I told at the waiter that we would go for a dive for 15-20 minutes and he replied “yes sure, no problem”. After we finished swimming, there was a great surprise waiting us! The manager had removed all our stuff from our table, and the table was cleaned with the menu opened and placed on top, waiting to welcome new guests, WITHOUT telling us anything prior to this action. In other words, they kicked us out before we even finish drinking our coffees! There is NOWHERE written, or told by anyone from the staff, that customers who sit at the tables for a brunch or coffee are NOT allowed to swim even for a sensible period of time, even though our dive didn’t last for more than 20 minutes. They claim that they offered us to sit at the sunbeds and we denied, but this is merely a lie, we chose to sit at the table because we simply wanted to have brunch. After this incident, the manager even dared to threaten us that the next time, they would take all our stuff upstairs, and he implied that we wouldn’t be able to have them back. We as family have never encountered with such hostile, aggressive and hypocritical individuals who are called professionals who work on tourism!!! Supper unprofessional and with great audacity, in previous visit of ours in June, the manager who is a man, even dared to follow my wife in the women’s toilet and waited patiently out of her door until she exits, to ask her for how long we are planning to sit at the table. In conclusion, if you want to ruin your holidays and get the outmost disrespect, just go there and you will find the best representatives of the Cretan “Filoxsenia” and hyronic staff that you ‘ve ever seen! Manager’s behaviour is the biggest shame of Crete, or even better the biggest same on a global level. We Wouldn’t recommend this place at all, except if you wish to have a...
Read more5 Stars!!! I absolutely love this place ❤❤❤ !!! It has everything you need: There also are plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. During my stay in Sougia I ate dinner here every time and even came back, although I was staying in Paleochora at that time. I hiked from there to Sougia just to enjoy the food, the friendly staff and the nice location in Sougia. I really like the food there, as they bring you bread and a small dish with cucumbers as a starter. You can also order a dip from the the many dips and sauces they got and combine it with the bread. I absolutely loved their tzitziki. Their desserts are also very tasty, especially these little coconut-chocolate balls that they serve you for free with some Raki at the end of your meal. But there is one thing almost better than the food: The extremely friendly and helpful staff and people who are running this restaurant: There is a German lady who is very nice: She helped me out with charging my powerbank, as I was camping in Sougia (which I didn't intend to do) and I had some nice chats with her. She is a very caring woman. Moreover, the "older" man was also very caring and would have allowed me to sleep in one of the rooms that would have been normally meant for his workers... very nice, but at that moment I already was in love with camping at the beach. The waiter is also top-notch: He remembered me and got me a water after my hike, allowed me to charge the powerbank and even paid my Matcha Latte for me, as he said the drink is on the house. Also he allowed me to use their sunbeds and umbrella for free as I was waiting for the ship back to Paleochora. So, the food is AMAZING, the staff extremely kind and warm-hearted and the location at its best.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CREATING SUCH A WARM, BEAUTIFUL ATMOSPHERE AND IMPROVING MY STAY IN SOUGIA BY 100%!!! In the future I will definitely come back to Sougia, as I have fallen in love with this place, and wish to enjoy a warm...
