Beautiful beach bar with comfortable beach beds and mostly decent food but unfortunately that is where it ends.
The club is partnered with the hotel "San Antonio" across the street. As hotel guests, we ask if it was possible to reserve two beach beds on the front row for the next day. We were kindly informed you can reserve a bed, but not specific ones as they operate on a first come first serve basis. This is perfectly fine for us. The day after we arrive and to our surprise two sets were available on the front row. We ask to be seated there and we are informed that "Sorry those specific beds are reserved for friends of the boss". This kind of favouritism is unreal to me. Of course the staff cannot help this; but this does not reflect well on leadership in my opinion. Creme de la creme: the "friends" arrived at 2pm, in the meanwhile several people asked for a bed but were refused.
Service started off well but gradually decreased. Some servers have their chin on the floor and appear they do not even want to be there. We were served twice without as much of a reply from the server and often they were just extremely brief. "Foods or drinks" - no other interactions.
Our food was mostly good. Here again mixed feelings. The chicken in the tacos were stale and we ordered a strawberry salad that arrived without strawberries... we informed the waiter that strawberries were missing, he went back and said "sorry we're out of strawberries, do you still want it". We kindly refused (not paying 15 euros for 5 leaves, 2 croutons and 2 sundried tomatoes) and they kindly took it back. All good if service did not drop considerably from that point. Felt like now we became "the annoying ones".
Our dinner on the first night was good and tasty. Delicious wines and flavours. If not for the bad service the following day we would have returned for dinner again.
as hotel guests, it is beyond me how you have to pay another 20 euro per day per 2 beds to sit on the beach. Even if you arrive late in the afternoon and all beds are free, still full price. Either offer a price/hr or price per half day.
In general - service was quite slow with the justification "we bring all orders together". Like, what do you mean? You are serving the entire beach at once? There's five of you chilling at the bar - a beer should not take 15...
Read moreOur second year staying at the beautiful San Antonio hotel in Kalami Bay, NE Corfu, we had booked a few restaurants in advance, our first visit being to Callao. We were seated at the end of the canopy, just before the beach, which seems to have less tables allocated than last year to make room for more loungers. Still a stunning view, we were attended to immediately by a host of wait staff who, whilst attentive, gave us & our experience plenty of room to breathe. My wife ordered a bottle of pinot for the table & soon we were attended to by the manager/sommelier, Aristotles, who recommended a Greek alternative for a (surprisingly) matching price, a recommendation that did not disappoint. We shared their famous moussaka croquettes & a Greek salad to start, and I must say it was my favourite Greek salad of all the restaurants I’ve eaten at. I had ordered a glass of Greek cab sauv to go with my main of lamb shank, and again Aristotles was on hand to suggest, in his view, a better pairing, and he absolutely was not wrong. He gave a lovely breakdown of the history (and mythology) of the grape as he poured which added to the whole experience, and charged no extra. Then, after a sufficient amount of time, the mains came; lamb shank for myself & ribeye for my wife. Initially I thought the waiters were going to leave the butter knife on the table for my wife to eat her steak & it would still have done the job; super tender & full of flavour. But the lamb shank was a different league; I commented that it would have fallen off the bone if I’d looked at it funny, and the meat almost required no chewing, going to strands in the mouth, washed down perfectly with the Avaton recommended by Aristotles. If you’re a red meat, and especially lamb fan, I can’t recommend highly enough. We shared a baclava to finish, which, again, was prepared fresh & served with a suitable wait, and the perfect cap to a wonderful experience. We’ve booked a return on their Jazz & Brazilian Soul night; musically which is very much in-keeping with the decor & ambience of the restaurant, but I must say, it will be a challenge to choose anything else from their diverse, but not overly-crowded menu. All in all, Callao is a wonderful dining experience, and while being the most upscale choice in Kalami Bay, is far from unreasonably priced & well...
Read moreMy partner and I were in Kalami for almost 2 weeks at the beginning of May. We stayed at Callao regularly during this time and really enjoyed it. Everything was perfect all round. The ambience and the furnishings invite you to stay for a very long time, especially the view of the bay is a highlight. In addition to the ambience, the culinary offer must also be mentioned. We attach great importance to good food and quickly realized that good food is very important at Callao. The composition of the menu and dishes is well thought out and you can tell that great importance is attached to the quality of the ingredients. There is also something for every taste when it comes to drinks. From good Greek wine - which I particularly loved - to local beer and unusual cocktails, there is something for everyone. And in addition to these aspects, the great team at Callao also deserves a special mention. You immediately feel welcome and in good hands. The good atmosphere in the team is palpable, which gives you a good feeling as a guest. The friendliness, openness and attentiveness of the team are particularly noteworthy. All in all, we can recommend a visit to Callao to everyone - we have rarely found a restaurant where we felt so comfortable and where everything fits together so perfectly. We are already looking forward to our next vacation in Kalami and our next...
