Fresh fish, seafood…it would really be a crime to visit Greece and not enjoy it. You can enjoy this food category in about any corner of this country, but one place stood apart from what I tried so far. Location: In April 2017 I decided to visit Piraeus after spending the morning in Athens. I took the metro towards Piraeus (more of a tram than metro) and ended up in the port. Since it was around 13:00 hours, I decided to enjoy lunch first, then walk around Piraeus. I headed towards the restaurant I discovered last evening on Trip Advisor and decided to give it a try. From the outside the place does not look big or luxurious but don’t let it fool you. From my experience the best places to eat are just like this: small, simple, filled with locals who want to enjoy fresh local food. The food: After sitting at a table outside and gazing at some octopuses hanging from a wire, a member of the staff came to me with the menu and told me it’s ok to pay with card also (this wouldn’t happen in Athens very often). She invited me inside to select the fresh fish that was about to get cooked, so after looking at the insides of the refrigerators I chose the barbun (red mallet) since I really enjoy this fish and chose to have it grilled. I chose a big Vegetable salad as a side dish, tzatziki and grilled octopus. I washed everything down with Mythos (local beer). I usually choose the house specialties but I figured it was a good place to try fish as this was a sea town and what better place to try seafood? As far as the food goes I can only say it was perfect. From the simple salad to the grilled fish and squid I really took my time and ate one of the most delicious meals I ever had. Not in Greece only but I took in consideration every fish tavern I ever tried in many countries. The dessert was on the house and it was great too. If I had to describe it, it was a sweet soft cake with cinnamon. Staff: The staff gets a big plus from me. From the moment I chose my table, to when I paid I felt at home, a feeling you rarely have when eating in a foreign country. Warm towels were provided at the end of the meal so I can clean the smell of fish from my hands and that brought another smile on my face. To conclude this review I would like to say just this: O Giannis Fish Tavern is clearly a place to eat more than once. The food is fresh, simple and it tastes incredible.

Good food with frozen fish clearly marked on the menu. Don't take bottled water but ask for tap water as it is safe and free. Sometimes you get the normal greek thing of a free little dessert and sometimes not, depending who is serving. Shame as it's delicious and really should be offered to all, even tourists. Whitebait is good. Smelt are smaller but sort of same. Both are fried The mixed salad with pickled carrots is delicious and easily serves two. If you don't want bread then tell them before ordering or they bring a heap of it at a charge per person. Would definitely recommend On street parking but it may take a few minutes to find a space

The sea food restaurant was as expected the food was good. We could get a table as we walked in. The restaurant was popular with the locals and the place was buzzing by 8.30pm on a weekday. There's is there option of indoor and outdoor seating. The staff here was patient and spoke in English to try and explain the menu. Food was served promptly. The fried calamari and sardines were good. We felt the prices were a little too expensive for its setting and service.

Hungry to eat seafood, we were excited to find this place by a google search, so walked 3.1 km, 45 minutes from the port on a cold and windy Saturday afternoon. The restaurant was not very crowded when we first arrived and we were sat immediately. It took quite a while for someone to come and take our order of drinks, salad, fries, and fish. We asked the waitress for a recommendation for fish, hoping to get one large enough for two. She said they didn't have any for two, so she recommended the red snapper for each of us ($50 / kg.) We inquired if anything came with the fish and when she said "no" we requested the fries be served with the fish. The place started to fill up. After another long wait we got our salad and drinks. We thought it strange no one served our order for bottled water, coke, and beer while we patiently waited for our food. While enjoying the salad, they brought a plate of toasted bread which we HAD NOT ordered. We refused it. (Why take something we hadn't ordered and didn't want? What if we were watching our carbs?) After we finished our salad and what seemed forever, we were served lukewarm fries but no fish. The fries were dry (not cooked in oil) like they "air fried" or were pre cooked and warmed in the oven. We were hungry so even cold and dry, they were eaten to the last crumb. Now we have been there for a least an hour. We continued to wait for our order of fish. Other people around us, and who arrived after us, had received their food, being served more and more as time had went. I wanted to pay and leave, but my wife insisted we remain patient. I finally had to ask about the fish and the waitress said it was coming. Ten minutes later, we asked another person. He went into the kitchen and finally came out with our order, two cold and dry pieces of fish. Who knows if hey might have been good if they came out when done. We paid our $64 euros bill ($44 for the fish) and left the fish sitting and untouched. So disappointing! We even got charged for the bread that we refused when it was brought to the table. So were we "blackballed" because we were not locals or refused bread? Everyone else seemed to get good service and their food looked wonderful. We got very expensive inedible food. If your a tourist, you a forewarned. You may have a better...
