Not believing such a high rating on Google - it just can't be! - we decided to check it ourselves and appreciate Sparta's cuisine. The restaurant is big, it has two halls and more tables in the garden, and at the weekend there were a lot of people. We sat down in the garden, and almost all the tables were occupied there. The interior is frankly ancient, old furniture, and the place is clearly not a tourist destination). Despite the large number of visitors, the service is fast. The menu in English is only printed on sheets of paper - the place is obviously not often placed by tourists. But the prices were very pleasant) Dakos salad was unbeatable, portions of salads can be taken for two people. Maniavico salad surprised with the combination of flavours-smoked pork with oranges and green onions-not bad at all! Disappointing was the mini chicken steak - chicken thigh with skin was slightly burnt. The traditional beef sausage was moderately spicy and with jacket potatoes. I really liked the cutlets with Kalanaki cheese and tomatoes - tender stewed meat was amazing! Surprised by the serving of wine in an aluminium mug, but the wine was ochen natural) Definitely recommend to try the cuisine of this restaurant! We paid ~50€ for 4...
Read moreThis was my favorite restaurant out of the 20 or so I ate at during a trip to the Peloponnese in February 2018. Stepping through the door takes you back 50 years in time into a large well decorated room with a high wooden ceiling. The food is fresh, speedily produced, flavorful, and offers some welcome variety to the kalamaki & greek salad menu that can have too much of as a tourist (they have that too but we didn't order it). Value for money was excellent and atmosphere is unpretentious, with brown paper on the tables. The Mani salad with smoked ham oranges and onions was a taste explosion (Laconian oranges are amazing). The fava & onion appetizer is excellent. The fried chicken with sweet chutney was terrific. The English speaking waiter anticipated our every need. The playlist was great (Giorgos Tzortzis). There was some smoke in the air because Sparta is in Greece; not bad though as ceiling is high and room is large. The decor is as good as the food-- barrels of wine up by the ceiling, colorful midcentury framed pictures on beautifully painted walls, a breathtaking rack of painted dishes by the bar in back. It is located right next to the main square and archaeology museum. All things considered, truly a wonderful and...
Read moreThis place is a rare gem. Lots of well priced choices, for vegetarians and non vegetarians alike. Very delicious and tasty and not just your usual tourist trap suspects but nice alternatives. I had beetroot with cheese for starter and meatballs with eggplant for main. Waiter was super friendly. Although they don't seem to do deserts I asked and the waiter offered yoghurt with honey (which I found out he didn't charge me for). Please tip adequately. I subtract 1 star for the relatively small portion of the main. Not sure this makes sense but while most Greek restaurants give you well, a 'Greek feeling/vibe' this place offers a more general 'balkan vibe' of course with a...
