A unique hotel experience that offers you a genuine taste of Icelandic heritage and tradition.
I was very impressed as soon as I arrived at the Viking Village, because of its stunningly unique exterior.
I can't think of another hotel in Iceland that catches the attention in quite the same way, and you can tell straight away that this is no ordinary hotel - you're going to be staying in an authentic 19th-century building.
The hotel simply exudes a rich tradition and heritage, giving you a genuine taste of Viking culture and history in every room.
If you walk around, you'll see fascinating wall-hangings, historical pictures, ancient artefacts and other memorabilia of past times.
The reception staff were extremely friendly, welcoming and very professional, making sure that I was comfortable and settled in my room.
As well as that, the hotel boasts an excellent restaurant, sited just a few yards away.
Here I enjoyed a splendid braised Lamb Shank, bathed in a rich red wine sauce and served with mashed potatoes, seasonal vegetables and topped off with a sweet rhubarb jam.
Again, the restaurant staff couldn't have been more friendly, dressed in traditional clothes and making sure I had everything I needed.
I've been to Iceland more than a dozen times now, and this is certainly in the top three hotels I've stayed in.
Highly recommended, particularly if you're looking for an authentic Icelandic experience and not just another...
Read moreThis establishment presents an interesting concept, yet its execution leaves room for improvement. While the food itself was undeniably flavorful, with the fish of the day being a standout for its freshness and taste, there is a notable deviation from the promised authenticity of Viking cuisine in the menu.
Despite the initial allure, a significant portion of the menu comprises typical American fare like burgers, fries, and nachos, which somewhat dilutes the authenticity of the overall dining experience. Expectations for genuine Viking dishes, as advertised, were not fully met.
On the service front, the experience was marred by a lack of attentiveness from the waitress. As we enjoyed a few beers, the waitress seemed to have disappeared, and it became challenging to locate someone to handle the payment.
In conclusion, the dining experience at this establishment can be described as satisfactory, with the food offering a pleasant taste, but the concept's execution, menu composition, and service aspects falling short of delivering an exceptional experience. There is potential for improvement to truly capture the envisioned concept and provide a more seamless and enjoyable...
Read moreOlder restaurant known for Viking feasts. We came here because it was next door to our hotel.
The first night they had an asparagus soup that was the best soup I've ever had. On other nights they served a decent mushroom soup. And always had a lamb soup available.
Service started with bread and butter and there were different versions . The first night was a lovely garlic pesto with small squares of bread. Another night the butter had crunchy salt crystals and full slices.
We tried several dishes over the course of our stay including fish and chips and flatbread pizza and all were good.
Service was very good as everyone seems to pitch in to take care of guests. Some nights they had musicians strolling through for the Viking feasts. The scale of some groups (140 in one room and 40 in another) seemed daunting from our perspective and yet everyone was fed and no one seemed unhappy. And we never had to wait long...
