Tilveran — Restaurant in Hafnarfjordur

Even though this was the only place I was able to go on my one day in Iceland, I think the experience made my trip worth it. Both the service and food were phenomenal, and I will not forget the kindness shown by the host!

I was looking for something uniquely Icelandic, and reviews brought me here. Looking for the cod cheek mentioned in earlier reviews(having tried it in Turku), instead I decided to try a fish called ‘plaice’ (since there was no cod cheek).

Plaice is delicious! At least, this restaurant certainly did a good job. The lobster sauce was creamy, but not too heavy; It complimented the smooth texture of the fish. The lightly crispy skin was definitely my favourite part! The vegetables brought a new dimension to the overall flavour, and I really felt like I had quite the treat today!

No words can describe how kind the staff was. I’ll be honest, I laughed a little when I walked in and saw the stop sign that said ‘Stop and Smile’; That sign is honestly such a good representation of Tilveran Restaurant! Both the people and the food made me smile. Wow, that's all there is to say about our meal. We were staying at a hotel down the street on our last night in Iceland and decided that we would take a chance on this place. I had read the reviews and thought they must be fake. They seemed too good to be true, too effusive to be sure, or so I thought. Turns out that all the nice things that people said were spot on. We started with the lobster soup then ordered Taglietelle with Garlic Roasted Lobster Tail and the Fish Trio for our mains. Let's just say that my wife and I travel the world looking for the best plate of food and this is certainly one meal that we will never forget. When we entered the resturant, it looked fancy and well put together. Key word is LOOKED. This place is a tourist trap and they overcharge for what they make. The servers are also horrible. They were eating in front of us and never got us any water or even asked if everything was ok. All they did was sit on top of tables and chat amongst themselves while on there phones.
