An evening at Cafe Memoire Before I start let me state that I had NOT informed in prior that we were going to cut a birthday cake

7 pm 18 of us come to Cafe Memoire for an Xmas party I had informed in prior that we would be there and had booked the space. We had really great food mostly starters both veg and non veg ,pizza and pasta. There was not much of a crowd there and the person at the billing counter asked us if we wanted karaoke. We had sooooi much . The cake was brought in at around 8.45 or so by the service personnel there and simultaneously we as well as another group of 3 cut the cake . At 9.12 we hen I asked for the bill I get a message from the owner saying that outside food is not allowed. I apologised saying I was not aware as no one told us. At the billing counter the person asks us to pay Rs 1000 as service charge because we cut the cake there which was got in from outside. When we asked him why it was not informed to us he did not have an answer. We had a massive argument there which was noisy as well … I told him I would pay if he includes it in the bill. Then comes another strange rule that they will generate a printed bill only if we pay . And that too the so called service charge will not be used included . The person thereafter refused to take the extra 1000 but kept stating that we had broken their rule . That was not too nice to hear and therefore I paid him the same . Subsequently the owner sent me an apology and refunded the extra 1000 which she is now refusing to take back. My question is simple . When should this have been told to a customer that outside food is not permitted ? Before the food is served or after the bill is made . Patrons Please note In case you are planning to cut a cake for your bday please find another cafe . Or else you will be breaking a rule . But then again I repeat we have no complaints against the service or the food or the ambience . But we definiteky will not visit the place again because all 18 of us aged between 12-45 felt let down by the fact that something that could have been informed in the beginning just spoils the experience forever . The owners can maybe ask the staff hereafter to inform customers in advance that cakes and celebrations are not allowed at cafe Memoire. One more thing The owner in her chat mentioned to me that in our earlier interaction had mentioned to me that outside. Food isn’t allowed and yes that’s true . She claims she asked me yesterday if a celebration was planned but actually this was a surprise party and cake cutting was not planned till this morning.
