Had a really great time there. The ambience is so calming and peaceful. Decor and music is very very good.
Absolutely loved the food. Went there in January, but I still remember the taste of the food now in July. It is really one of a kind. Had the same dishes from other places too, but Shanghai's flavours are really good. It's so mild and flavorful at the same time. I m absolutely stunned by them.
The staff are so good, well mannered, well behaved. Makes you feel comfortable, very patient. Follows orders very gently, soft spoken and all good things.
The ambience and decor is wonderful. There's soft music being played which is some kind of instrumental, you can hear them in the videos I have uploaded.
The Fresh Lime Soda was very good in taste. And so was the Cold drink. Served in long glasses with cardboard straws.
Had their Veg Spring Roll first. Not taking any names but I have had it from other Chinese restaurants also, never came across such a beautiful taste. Super crunchy but not so hard layer with super soft and juicy insides. So full of flavours but yet not spicy. I m literally obsessed with the Honey Chilli sauce that they served with it. Too good!
Then we ordered Golden Fried Prawns. My God! The taste was very good. Thin crunchy outside layer with soft prawns inside. You cannot tell what they used to cook them as you won't be getting any smell in particular. Videos are attached of how beautiful the Prawns are. Loved them. And also put the Honey Chilli sauce with it. I had so much of the sauce that they had to refill the pot.
We had ordered some basic things for main course like Veg Fried Rice and Chilli Chicken. The tastes were both very good. The amount was really good for two people.
And finally for dessert we had my favourite, Darsan with Vanilla Ice Cream. I have had Darsan many times before but this one stands out from the rest. The frying was golden brown in colour and the sugar syrup was so nice, not too sticky not too runny. Perfect taste. And with the scoop of vanilla ice cream, the taste enhanced by 10 times no doubt.
Went there to celebrate a special day (didn't tell them though). We had spent a long time chatting, while the staff patiently waited for us to place the orders. They didn't rush us for anything. After the starters were done, we requested them to wait for some time, they didn't come near us until we called them. Loved the experience, will...
Read moreSanghai: The Taste of China
Rating: ★★★★☆ (4/5)
Location: Kolkata, West Bengal, India
Ambiance: Sanghai offers a charming blend of traditional Chinese decor and modern elegance. The cozy atmosphere, soft lighting, and comfortable seating make it an inviting place for a meal, whether you’re dining with family, friends, or on a special occasion.
Food: During our visit, we sampled a variety of dishes with mixed results:
Ramen: The Ramen was decent, with a flavorful broth and well-cooked noodles, though it didn’t particularly stand out.
Butter Garlic Fish: This dish was the highlight of our meal. The fish was perfectly cooked, tender, and infused with a rich, buttery garlic sauce that was simply delicious.
Vegetable Hakka Noodles: The Veg Hakka Noodles were good, offering a nice balance of flavors and a satisfying texture.
Mixed Fried Rice: Unfortunately, the Mixed Fried Rice was quite average and didn’t leave much of an impression.
Prawn Toast: The Prawn Toast was excellent, crispy on the outside with a flavorful prawn filling that was a delight to eat.
Service: The service at Sanghai was commendable. The staff were attentive and friendly, ensuring that our dining experience was pleasant. They were knowledgeable about the menu and provided helpful recommendations.
Value: While the prices are slightly on the higher side, the quality of the food and the overall dining experience make it worth the cost. It’s a great spot for a special night out or to celebrate an occasion.
Overall: Sanghai: The Taste of China is a fantastic choice for those looking to enjoy authentic Chinese cuisine in Kolkata. Despite some dishes being just okay, the exceptional Butter Garlic Fish and Prawn Toast, along with the excellent service, make it a restaurant worth visiting.
I hope this review captures your experience at Sanghai! Is there anything else you’d like to add or another dish...
Read moreWe (group of 5) went there on a Saturday afternoon around 3:30pm. The restaurant is located at a distance of 1min walk from the Baisakhi Island which is easily accessible in the Salt Lake area. The inner seating place was to close by 4pm so they told us to seat in the outer seating arrangement where there were chairs instead of sofas. The ambience was giving authentic Chinese vibes. We ordered 👇🏻 In starters: a) Golden Fried Prawn ₹390 8pcs 🍤 b) Panko Fried Fish Basa ₹320 [10pcs] 🐠
In main course: a) Shanghai Special Fried Rice (chicken) ₹240 🍚 b) Shanghai Special Fried Rice (mixed) ₹260 🍚 c)Pan Fried Noodles (chicken) ₹235 🍜 d) Hunan Fish Basa ₹335 [10pcs] 🐠 e) Kung Pao Chicken ₹310 [10pcs] 🍗
In desserts: a) A combo pack of 2 glasses of cold drinks with 2 scoops of ice-cream of your choice at ₹149 (this was an offer from their bday month discounts) 🍨🍻 b) Darshan with Ice Cream ₹210 🍧 c) Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream ₹210 🍨
Each and every dish tasted authentic and was well cooked. The quantity in comparison with the price is sufficient. Staff behavior was also good. Would recommend this restaurant to all the Chinese food lovers.
Note: Their bday month discounts (different combo packs are available and all the prawn items are available at only ₹333) are going on till 16th Oct 2023, so try to give a visit within this time. But you can't pay for the discounted items through dineout or other such things.
So we wanted a separate bill for the discounted dishes. Our bill for the other dishes was ₹2310 while the one for discounted items was ₹506.
We were starving at the time when we reached the restaurant. But the good food in a pocket friendly price really fulfilled our hunger and uplifted our mood. Time spent there was...
