A ten minutes walk from the metro station, this canteen serves the most varied and scrumptious dishes I’ve tasted in Delhi at very affordable prices. It’s a government-aided canteen with an average looking building which has most of the seating space outside the small room which serves as the kitchen and counter of Panditji ki Canteen. There’s limited seating space inside but its never really difficult to find a seat if you aren’t going in a large group.
Coming to the menu, two items in the canteen are stars of the campus: the sweet samosa and the cold coffee.
You might not have heard much of sweet samosa before this, but canteen never runs out of it. It’s a special dish which has been a topic of discussion even in newspapers. It’s filled with condensed milk along with small dry fruits and chasni on the top which makes it taste somewhat like gujiya.
Now you might be thinking what can be special with the cold coffee? Well, its too cheap for the taste it offers and the mug in which its served is also pretty cool. It looks good, tastes good and costs only 50 bucks.
Other common food items like pasta, varieties of chowmein like Singapuri and white chowmein, different types of maggi, toasts, sandwiches, eggs, tikki, spring roll, cutlet, aloo bonda, mix pakoda along with many other snacks and starters are available.
They also serve main course food items mainly available during lunchtime like paneer bhujia, chole rice, aloo rice, rajma rice and several types of thalis.
Meat is not available and no single item has a price higher than 100 bucks.
The average cost of the food of two people at Panditji ki Canteen is 200 bucks that too when you’ve ordered two coffees and 2-3 variety dishes.
The canteen has the power of satisfying all your taste buds, tummy, and pocket at the same time which is rare as at least one of these is harmed when we...
Read morePandit Ji's canteen in Gwyer Hall at Delhi University is a well-known and beloved eatery among students and faculty. It's famous for its affordable and delicious North Indian snacks and meals. The canteen has a nostalgic charm, often serving as a social hub where students gather to chat, study, and enjoy good food. Popular items include samosas, chole bhature, and parathas, along with chai and coffee. It's a quintessential part of the DU experience, known for its welcoming atmosphere and tasty, budget-friendly food.
In the early 2000s, I used to throng this canteen regularly as a DU student. It was our go-to place for evening munchies. Bored of the bland mess and tiffin food, this place, nurtured by the late Pandit Ji, pampered us with sweet samosas, sweet toast, savory pakoras, eggs, butter toast, steaming tea, and more.
Cut to 2024, whenever I occasionally visit the Kamla Nagar area with my wife and 4-year-old son, I make it a point to visit Pandit Ji's canteen and recount old days with the owner. It is ably managed by Pandit Ji's gentle son, Yogesh, who has carried forward the culinary legacy. Although it has an expanded menu and is a little more crowded, this place still retains its old-world charm, with retro filmy numbers playing from the Saregama Caravan.
Special word for Lukman bhai, whose attentive and friendly service since Pandit ji's time till today, has helped in retaining the...
