Goa Series Post 3 // Trying Goan food is like trying various heritage in one platter. It is influenced by Portuguese culture and drizzled with contemporary fad. A Goan thali comes with a variety of food but it is incomplete without the very staple rice and fish curry. Goan thali is mainly composed of : Starters : 1. Fish Suke or Dhabdhabit - a side dish 2. Feijoada - a side serving stewed dish influenced by Portuguese cuisine 3. Dangar aka fish cutlet. 4. Chamuka - a stuffed dish Main Course : 1. Boiled rice - the main course is incomplete without rice 2. Pickes - no goan dish is served without pickles. 3. Humann aka fish curry - the curry is served with rice. Visvan is the most common delicacy for fish curry. 4. Uddamethi - a curry made of mackerel and Fenugreek. A vegetarian version of Uddamethi is made by using tangy pieces of mango and Fenugreek. 5. Shak - a stir fried dish made of vegetables and fruits 6. Kismur - a dish with mackerel as chief ingredient. 7. Ambot tik - sour curry dish 8. Varieties of pickles and papads Desserts : 1. Bebinca - traditional 7 layered goan pudding 2. Cocada - a sweet barfi made up mainly of coconut and chocolate 3. Bolo De Rulao - a cake made up of semolina and coconut Places to try spectacular goan thali in North Goa : 1. Vinakyak - Assagao - dine-in/takeaway/delivery services - INR 600-700 for two (without alcohol) - authentic food options 2. Ganesh Restaurant - Junaswada, Mandrem - dine-in/takeaway/delivery services - INR 500 for two - feels like home-made food 3. Bombil - Panaji - dine-in/takeaway/delivery services - INR 350 for two - goan vibe 4. Satpurush - Morjim - dine-in/takeaway services, no delivery - INR 550 for two - dhaba style 5. Fat Fish - Arpora, Goa - INR 700 for two - classic sea food options Finishing a goan thali is not an easy task as major ingredients are coconut, fishes, shrimp, tangy fruits, etc. Goan food has multivariate history which is deeply influenced by different cultures. At these restaurants, you can actually try those cultures, of course in single plate. Let me know where you’ve had the best Goan Thali in the comments below!

Fatfish: The Ultimate Seafood Haven in Goa If you're a seafood enthusiast visiting Goa, Fatfish is an absolute must-visit. Nestled in an open shack-style setting, this restaurant embodies the laid-back, vibrant Goan vibe, making it a quintessential dining experience. Fatfish offers a rustic charm with no air conditioning, but trust me, the excellent food more than compensates for it. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by the enticing aroma of fresh seafood being expertly prepared. The menu is a seafood lover's paradise, boasting a wide array of dishes that highlight the freshest catches of the day. Whether it's calamari (squid), prawns balchao, sorpotel, lobsters, crabs, or oysters, each dish promises a burst of flavors that are bound to tantalize your taste buds. One of the standout dishes is the golden fried calamari or rawa fried calamari, chonak perfectly cooked to maintain its delicate texture and infused with spices that give it a delightful kick. The prawns, succulent and juicy, are another crowd favourite, whether grilled, fried, or cooked in balchao form. For those looking for something truly indulgent, the lobsters and crabs are an absolute treat, offering sweet, tender meat that is a true testament to the quality of the seafood. Additionally, the Kingfish (Surmai) at Fatfish is exceptional, whether grilled or fried. Another local favourite, Chonak, is available in either fry form or rechado form, and it is simply lip-smacking. Each bite of these dishes is a testament to the restaurant’s commitment to freshness and flavour. Despite the potential for long wait times, which can range from an hour to an hour and a half, there's a simple trick to beat the crowd: skip breakfast and arrive early. If you can make it by 12-12:30 pm, you're almost guaranteed a table without the wait. Post 12:30, the wait time becomes unpredictable, so plan accordingly. Adding to the culinary delight is Fatfish's impressive alcohol options, which perfectly complements the seafood dishes. The selection features both local and international options, ensuring there's something for every palate. In summary, Fatfish offers a lip-smacking seafood experience that's well worth the wait. The combination of fresh, expertly prepared dishes and the authentic Goan ambience creates an unforgettable dining adventure. So, set your alarm a little early, beat the rush, and indulge in one of the best seafood experiences Goa has to offer.

Let me tell you about my recent dining experience at Restaurant Fat FISH GOA. As soon as you step inside, you'll be greeted by a unique red fish logo blowing bubbles. The rustic ambience with a thatched roof and a long bar is perfect for a chill and trendy vibe. Now let's talk about the food. This place is a seafood lover's paradise, offering a variety of dishes from Continental North Indian to Goan cuisine. Parking is ample and they even have WiFi, so you can post those drool-worthy pictures on Instagram. But here's the catch, it's always crowded. So if you manage to snag a table, consider yourself lucky. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. We tried their grilled fish and it was absolutely delicious. And let me tell you, their Goan fish thali is a must-try. One thali is enough for two people and the prices are reasonable compared to other restaurants in Goa. Now, let's dive into the details of their menu. The variety of thalis here is amazing, especially for fish lovers. The goan thali is a fan-shaped platter with seven katoris (small bowls) filled with different delicacies. From salads to prawn curry to homemade crumbled mussels, every katori is bursting with flavor. And if you're not a seafood fan, fret not. They also serve Indian dishes like chicken malai tikka and chicken makhani. Finding this restaurant is a piece of cake, as it is located on the main road from Baga to Aprora. And trust me, the name itself will make you crave some fat fried fish. The white decor with black tiles gives the place a classy yet laid-back vibe. Now, let's talk money. The prices are affordable and the portions are generous. So if you're in the mood for some lip-smacking Goan dishes, Fat Fish is the place to be. The only downside was that the service was a bit slow, but they have a huge parking space and even wheelchair access. In conclusion, Fat Fish is definitely a top choice for seafood lovers, especially during monsoon season. So come on over and experience the tastiest fish in town. I promise, you won't be disappointed.

journey began in 2012. Fat Fish is an Indulgence that brings together two distinct Goan flavors, The Goan Portuguese and The Hindu Saraswat Cuisines As the name suggests this place will have you purr like a content kitten. The seafood delicacies on offer include shrimps to squids lobsters to crabs, in short we have got the oceans best on our platter. It’s really an open secret for all those who visit Goa, a place to relax and savor ones meal.Open through the year, Fat Fish is a charming restaurant on the Calangute-Arpora Road. It serves up stellar fish thalis and other Goan delicacies. Their seafood and fish thalis are epic! The breezy laidback ambience, fish thalis that serve up a selection of really fresh seafood, and Goan dishes done right, this one deserves a visit. Fashioned like an open gazebo, there’s plenty of light and breeze that pours into the massive space, making it an ideal lunch spot with the gang. Fat Fish’s menu is pretty vast and includes Goan, Indian, Italian, Tandoori fare and a spattering of Continental. But when in Goa, go the Goan way. We ordered their Special Goan Fish Thali along with a King Fish Recheado Masala Fry. We were rewarded with a massive thali. And at just INR 200 something, we got a generous mound of steamed rice paired with two kinds of fish curry. A mellow, coconut-based curry while the other came with a hit of chilli. There was also a serving of crab curry and although the crab didn’t have much meat on it, the thick, coconut-based gravy was infused with the sweetness of the crabmeat. Beside it, was a Mussels dish that was lightly tossed in coconut, onions, and a few spices. We also got a serving of vegetables done in typical Goan style. There was also a giant slice of rawa-coated, fried King Fish that added crunch to the thali. We washed all of this down with a glass of chilled beer (that have plenty of brands on tap). Their Goan Sausage Pulao is one of the best we had in the sunny State. The generously spiced rice was accompanied by the tanginess and the smokiness of the cut up sausages and made for a heavenly dish. From fellow Fat Fish fans, we’ve heard great things about their Prawn Butter Garlic that comes drenched in a silken sauce. The desserts here too deserve a mention with the gooey and rich chocolate brownie and the luscious caramel custard being unanimous favourites. The fish thali is only available between 1-3pm and the place gets packed during the peak season, so be prepared to wait... It'll be totally worth it.
