Baba Review 29th Oct 2020
Very rarely is every dish at a restaurant exceptionally good. And very rarely does one come out hundred percent satisfied. But Baba's on Golf Course Road in Gurgaon managed to do just that. It was an establishment that I had noticed many a times in passing, and heard of many a times in general conversation. I had however never paid much heed to its existance. Dining in at Baba Ka Dhaba was quit an impromtu occasion.
This eatery has its roots in Ludhiana, and has existed for years, since 1962. The Gurgaon branch however, has been around for just about 3. Walking through the main enterance, I was greeted with the names of their iconic dishes plastered on their glass facade. That was all the persuation I needed in deciding what to order.
THE FISH FRY: Never have I ever tasted fish fry that has been this crunchy on the outside and this fresh and supple on the inside. The fried fish was marinated to perfection with a blend of subtle indian spices, batter coated and fried. The end result was a juicy and light textured flilet on the inside, with an extreme crunch on the outside. This dish is one that I highly recommend.
THE BUTTER CHICKEN: Unlike the usual butter chicken that is a staple on any Indian menu, the butter chicken at Baba's was a rich yellow gravy, mellowed with loads of cream and dried Fenugreek leaves. The innitial shock and scepticism I had at its unique appearence was immidiately put at ease with the first heavenly bite I took. This increadible recipe, that is a signature at Baba's, is a must try while dining here
THE TANDOORI ALOOS: This particular dish was the most ordinary, for a lack of a better word. That does not mean it was sub-par in any way. What I mean by ordinary is that I knew exactly what to expect while placing the order, and they did manage to meet every expectation I had for them. The potatoes were perfectly done in a subtle tandoori masala and we're stuffed with paneer and raisins.
THE BREADS: The order placed was the standard, tandoori roti, laccha paratha and garlic naan. What took the cake though, was the mirchi roti, an exquisitly crafted whole wheat flat bread with just the right burst of green chilly flavour, without the spice of the chilli itself. Having had mirchi rotis at other establishments, I found the ones at Baba's unique in as much as the chillis used were fresh green ones stuck on top with dollaps of white butter, rather than the red chilli powder kneeded straight into the dough elsewhere.
The highlight of Baba's was the freshness of ingredients, the quality of produce, the prompt and courteous service and a perfect balance of uniquness and standardness of recipies that made for an element of interest in every dish while retaining elements of comfort and familiarity. Non of the food sat heavy or made one uncomfortable.
If there is one complain I have though, it is the fact that a restaurant of this calliber and price range served us on disposible crockery and cutlery, which is accaptable in these times of covid-19, but charged Rs.20 a piece, which was very distastful and miserly of them. Additionally they were all out of their spinach and corn rolls, another signature dish at this establishment. It is only for these two reasons Baba's does not get a 5 star rating from...

Fried Chicken was well cooked with crispy and flavourful coating.
Veg Platter was decent, one of the better ones mushroom stood out for me in particular.
Butter chicken: if you are fan of non sweet butter chicken, this one is for you. I personally like the sweeter one, still liked this a lot.
Palak meat: again lips smaking, with good pieces.
Broccoli Soup and lemon corriander soup: both the soups were very flavour ful, lemon coriander soup was better than the other for my pallette.
Ambience on terrace as well as ground floor was pretty nice, good for family, date or group of friends.
Service though quick but was a let down, the servers were in some kind of hurry although it was still more than an hour to closing time when we reached. The server kept on insisting to order the main course along with soup and snacks. On repeated(2-3 times) request he finally agreed to take order for only soup and snacks while we decide on main course. They lacked knowledge of details of dishes when enquired about...
