Amma Hotel — Restaurant in Kerala

Amma hotel was crowded than paragon and like in paragon , we would have to wait behind someone who is almost finishing their food and jump on to the seats .

But all this was worth it . Really enjoyed the fish meals . They only serve fish and rice meals. And is served on banana leaves.

The best part i liked was their curry they offered for rice . The curry is only "saalan" with bits of fish if you are lucky. The guy who served us was witty and announced that it was fish curry without pieces . After he poured some curry , i got two bits of fish in it and i told the guy about it ... He said i was lucky and should try a Kerala lottery after lunch.

The vegetarian saalan was as tasty as the fish saalan .

The highlight is the fried fish which comes on a plate looking delicious in its dressing of masala .

Ayakoora ( seer fish ) , chempalli ( red snapper ), sraavu ( shark) and Ayala ( mackerel) were the choice for this day.

Since it is Calicut the fish were fresh as possible.

Meals are around rs 60 and seer @180 and mackerel @110.

Bottled water is sold at mrp and available on request.

Rice gruel water is served alongwith the meals .

Since most bloggers have covered Amma hotel there is a tremendous rush at the hotel.

But there is also a competitor just next to this hotel who gets customers who couldn't wait to get a seat at Amma .

Ambience of the hotel is basic , i don't care about ambience coz I go for good food and for this taste and price ... It's a Lovely place , it's a lovely place !

For parking , there is an ashram nearby and they were kind enough to allow parking in their compound . There is also another parking opposite the ashram .

There are people from all over coming to this place and i could see Karnataka , tamilnadu and Andhra registered vehicles parked .

To sum it up ..... Good one .

Edit: I am editing my earlier review as I went again in Dec-2020 for 2nd time because seniors had come from outside Kerala and they were specifically suggested this place. Putting in more honest information as I believe people shouldn't get carried away by the unnecessary hype. Also, this time the leaf they gave me had some food particles (OMG) on them and I had to get them replaced

Original Review: Over hyped place Didn't feel anything special Ambience of a large khanawli (Home food) like setup up we see in other places but very pricey... about 60-70 people accomadated at a time

Main lunch menu consisted of Rice with 2 curries (Fish curry with micro pieces of fish and veg curry with no vegetables) one brown beans side dish and pickles. Special fish fry also available... overall it's very spicy The cost of above is ₹250

The veg curry is tasteless, no spice, no sour no salt even. It would have been better if they could give curd, buttermilk or atleast the buttermilk curry (Mor)

Second servings of the side dishes and curry are curtly ignored and only served once in a while

Service is sloppy with food thrown all over... Even table cleaning guy will drop the leftover on your dress without any apologies

Lots of crowd from all over visiting this place especially office executives during lunch time due to the hub

Edit: No ambience, in Kerala heat eating becomes sweaty affair and on top of that the spicy fish.

Warning : Visit only if you want to get a local experience of deep fried fish in lot's of oil and...

Highly overrated food spot in Calicut.

Food: 4⭐️ Meals is only 65 but the real star is that Soft & tender fish fry(comes very spicy these days).It’s really tasty and worth trying. Cost varies(for a ref: Chembally -160, Neymeen - 190)

Atmosphere: 1⭐️ On a tight space, you will have to wait long time to find a space.Its equally disgusting to wait for your turn and also while eating because you know that at least 4 pairs of eyes will be on you to secure a chair for their meals, it’s really really disgusting to be watched by a lot of people around you that will force you to finish your meals at the earliest as possible.I am 100% sure that no one can enjoy the food here unless you can find a place where none can watch you.The restaurant authorities are not taking any attempts to reduce this rush and waiting lane.

Service: 1⭐️ Make sure to fill the plate with whatever you want on the first go itself, never expect the serving staff to come again(mainly attributed to the atmosphere, waiting people will be covering all the tables).Your cry for the servings will go unheard in the thick crowd of waiting lane.

In short: food is good, but it’s not worthy for the atmosphere where it’s being served, EOD you will feel like you have finished your meals for the sake of some one...
