I recently visited Kerala Lunch Home in Thoppumpady, Kochi, after hearing a few locals recommend it for its traditional Kerala meals. Overall, I would rate my experience as average — hence the 3 stars. There are definitely some positives here, but also several areas where improvements are needed.
Starting with the food, which is the highlight of the place — the meals are quite authentic and flavorful. I ordered a typical Kerala-style lunch with rice, sambar, thoran, avial, and fish curry. The fish curry was spicy and tangy, cooked in traditional red chili and tamarind-based gravy, which gave it that classic coastal taste. The side dishes were fresh and tasty, although a bit on the saltier side. They serve food on banana leaves, which adds to the authentic touch and enhances the experience. The portion sizes are generous, and the pricing is very reasonable — ideal for those looking for a budget-friendly meal.
However, while the food was good, the service left a lot to be desired. It was quite slow, and we had to wait a while even though the restaurant wasn’t full at the time. The staff seemed overwhelmed and not very attentive. We had to ask multiple times for water and extra curry, which was a bit frustrating. Friendly service goes a long way in enhancing the overall dining experience, and unfortunately, that aspect was lacking here.
The ambiance and cleanliness are also worth mentioning. Kerala Lunch Home is clearly meant to be a no-frills, functional eatery, not a place you go for the atmosphere. That’s fine, but basic cleanliness still needs to be maintained. The tables were not wiped down properly, and the floor looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in a while. The handwashing area was especially unhygienic and could use some serious upkeep. While the locals might be used to it, anyone expecting a slightly cleaner dining environment might be disappointed.
In terms of location, it's easily accessible and located right in Thoppumpady, which is convenient for anyone passing through the area or working nearby. It seems to be a popular spot for daily wage workers, auto drivers, and office-goers looking for a quick and filling lunch.
To summarize, Kerala Lunch Home is a decent place to grab a traditional Kerala meal at an affordable price. The food is homely, fresh, and flavorful, but the overall experience is pulled down by poor service and lack of cleanliness. If you’re someone who can overlook those shortcomings in favor of authentic local food, it’s worth trying at least once. But if you value hygiene and a more pleasant dining environment, this may not be the best choice.
With a bit more attention to customer service and cleanliness, Kerala Lunch Home could be a standout local eatery. I hope they consider making these improvements — the food deserves a better setting...
Read moreI cannot recommend this place enough! The quality and quantity of food at this price point exceeds all expectations. The food tastes very homely, and every single time I have ordered I receive the food in a paper bag with a handwritten note on it that really makes me feel that they have great attention to detail and care about customer experience. I've been relying on them to get sides for my lunch on days I'm too busy to cook. I love their kozhuva fry - which is not only very generously portioned, but always arrives warm and crisp, the way all of us at home like it. They are one of few places that offer Kerala style prawns, without overcooking it. It was so nice to tuck into prawn mango curry and bite into soft succulent prawns, instead of the rubbery stringy ones. Rooting for this place to thrive and keep up the quality and consistency even as they grow. I am a Swiggy customer and am hoping to dine there in...
Read moreThe ambience here was absolutely lovely—warm and welcoming, with décor that really celebrates Kerala’s culture and cuisine. It instantly sets the mood for a proper traditional meal. I especially liked the way they bring out a tray with all the dishes, so you can actually see what’s on offer before choosing—it adds such a homely touch! We went for the meals with squid roast, prawns roast, fish curry, and kozhuva fry, and honestly, everything was spot on. Each dish had that authentic, home-style flavor that makes you feel like you’re eating a lovingly prepared meal rather than something straight out of a restaurant kitchen. Overall, it was a delightful experience—great food, cozy ambience, and that unmistakable homely feel. Definitely a place I’d love to go back to when I’m craving proper...
