Bringing the food standards low in the capital city. It is joints like these which give the people substandard services that have a larger impact on the overall food industry in a city. Others see their growth and profits coupled with very poor quality food and service and they think this is enough to satisfy the people of Trivandrum, therefore they follow the same path.
Firstly the food, it was nothing special (infact it was bad except for a few items). They do just about average with the south Indian dishes, but don't even think of going north or Chinese. The Chilli Porotta here is the worst I have ever had. It is a glorified Kothuporotta with an ungodly amount of onions. Same goes for other North Indian dishes. Too much oil and not at all tasty. Even the south indian dishes cannot be compared to other restaurants in the city.
Secondly the service, the service was sub par, the servers would often shout at eachother and are not careful with the food. Very loud and irritating environment. The tables are not cleaned promptly and the biggest difference I noticed was the lack of empathy. Usually the Tamilians and Sree Saravana Bhavan staff (Which they false fully try to impersonate, see the name 'SRII' which is a crime in itself, trying to fool us regular folks in believing they are something they are definitely not) are very much welcoming and have a kind heart. These people are just there for the money and tips if any and nothing else. Customer does not matter to them.
Thirdly the physical appearance, see that I didn't use the word ambience, because it hasn't got any. The restaurant premises are very unclean and smells a lot. It has very poorly maintained seating and washing areas. I do not want to talk about the washroom because it would be a disrespect to other washrooms all around the world (yes it was that bad, and also considering the fact that it is on a shoulder road on the primary national highway in Trivandrum, it makes it even worse). The floor also was slippery and unclean.
Finally the price. Having written an essay about their very poor food, service and physical areas, one would think that they would compensate for all this on their price. Well that's where 'SRII' Saravana Bhavan has again bamboozled me. The prices are outrageous. It costs almost 1.5 times the amount that you would normally pay in a veg restaurant. And it is not even AC and well I have explained all the other shortcomings.(I do know they offer AC in some part of their restaurant but I did not get the chance to try it, and frankly I don't regret trying, I sense it would be even worse than open air).
These kinds of restaurants must not be allowed to feed on the helplessness of the regular people. Most people that come here and eat are the professionals in UST, Infosys and Technopark. They come here because of its vicinity to these organisations. Do not fall prey to the location of this restaurant and the name it carries. It is not worth it. I would rather starve than to eat another meal from this restaurant. I have brought myself to try at this restaurant several times, in hope that this time would be different. But there is no change. They will not change because they are satisfied with their sales. Everytime that I go past this restaurant and see a huge crowd, it pains me. It pains me that we, as trivians have to settle for places like this. And those writing 5 star reviews, I humbly request you to try out other, good restaurants and see how a restaurant should be. And to the travellers who might stumble upon this restaurant, please don't take your foot off the accelerator. Keep going, there are far better...

Read moreI recently visited Sri Saravana Bhavan Vegetarian Hotel with my family for dinner, and unfortunately, it turned out to be one of the most disappointing dining experiences we have had in a long time. Right from the moment we entered, the hygiene and cleanliness of the restaurant were questionable. The handwash area was in a very poor condition, with water spilled all over the floor, making it unsafe and unpleasant to use. To make matters worse, the plate trolley and drinking water tank were kept right next to the washroom and handwash section. This arrangement clearly shows a lack of concern for basic hygiene standards, which is very discouraging for anyone who expects a clean dining environment.
Coming to the food, it was equally unsatisfactory. We ordered battura, ghee roast, porotta, and kuthu porotta. The dosa that was served to us had a sour taste, which clearly indicated it was not fresh. The battura was rubbery in texture, making it almost impossible to enjoy. The kuthu porotta was excessively spicy and overloaded with masala to the point that it was inedible. Even though we tried, we could not finish even half of the food that was served. For a restaurant that claims to specialize in vegetarian South Indian dishes, the quality was far below basic expectations.
Overall, both the cleanliness and the quality of food were completely unsatisfactory. Dining out is supposed to be a pleasant experience, but here it turned into disappointment and frustration. I would not recommend this place to anyone who values hygiene, taste, or...
