I recently had lunch at Vayalil Restaurant in Trivandrum, and overall, I’d say it was a decent experience, especially if you’re looking for a budget-friendly place with a neat and calm atmosphere.
I went in around lunchtime and ordered a typical Kerala meals plate. The service was fairly quick, and the staff was polite, which gave a good first impression. The ambience stood out right away — simple but clean and spacious, with enough seating to accommodate a fair crowd without feeling cramped. It’s the kind of place you’d feel comfortable coming to for a casual lunch, whether you’re alone or with a small group.
Now, coming to the food — the meals were just okay. Nothing bad, but nothing to rave about either. The rice was well-cooked, and they served the usual sides like sambar, thoran, and pickle, but the overall flavor was a bit on the bland side. I was hoping for that classic Kerala “home-cooked” punch in the curries, but it fell a little flat for me. Not a dealbreaker, but not something I’d remember or come back just for.
I also ordered a nemeen (seer fish) fry, which I was quite curious to try. Unfortunately, this too was just average. It was fried nicely and looked appealing on the plate, but the taste didn’t quite match up. It wasn’t bad or undercooked — it just lacked seasoning and flavor depth. For a place serving coastal cuisine, I was expecting more boldness in the spices or marinade. I wouldn’t say it was not edible, just that it didn’t leave any impression.
On the positive side, the pricing is definitely reasonable, and I can see why this place might be popular among locals or office-goers looking for a quick and affordable lunch. The cleanliness, both in the dining area and washrooms, was commendable — which is not always a given in small budget eateries.
To sum it up, Vayalil Restaurant is okay for a quick, no-fuss meal, especially if you’re on a budget and prefer a clean environment. But if you’re someone who’s going for taste and flavor-packed meals, it might not fully hit the mark. I’d give it 3 stars for being clean, affordable, and decent — but there’s definitely room for improvement when it comes to the food taste, especially their fish fry and...
Read moreHad a really pathetic experience here. Starting first we were a group of 10 people so we requested to merge the tables to sit together but the service executive said that they cant merge the tables as it is tough for them to serve and the tables are heavy to move, but it didn't appear inconvenient for them to move around as corner tables had to be merged. Then we had to go down to the billing section and they came up to adjust the table and when the next customers came I don't know how the immovable tables moved quickly. Next with the food the waiting time was long so we expected atleast the food would be good. First came the kebab platter as we were very hungry even though it was not well cooked we all grabbed it. Later came parotta and chapati they were good but the curry none of us liked. The chicken mughlai was creamy and not that tasty. Next came the noodles it was okay when compared to other food. The chettinad beef was also not that good and dragon chicken fried rice and chicken pulav was also mediocre. We order beef olathoyathu and the only tasty thing in that was the onions and grated coconut. After all this we ordered a chicken 65 and we expected atleast that will be good but it was also undercooked, we tasted it and left it as such. This is the first time I have wasted so much food in a restaurant. I don't know if the quality is reduced now because we visited the restaurant after seeing the review. We expected basic edible food atleast but were disappointed...
Read moreVisited this restaurant recently and found the experience to be quite average overall. While the ambience is genuinely impressive—with stylish decor, cozy lighting, and a relaxing vibe—the rest of the visit didn’t quite went well.
🍽️ Food Quality
The taste of the dishes were just okay. Nothing stood out, and the flavors felt underwhelming. It’s not bad, but certainly not memorable or worth a repeat visit based on food alone.
📋 Menu Accuracy
One major issue was the inconsistency between the menu and what was actually served. Dish names and descriptions didn’t match the served one
💰 Pricing
Prices are noticeably higher than similar restaurants in the area. Given the average quality and the mismatch between menu and food, the value for money is poor.
🌿 Ambience
This is the one area where the restaurant truly shines. The interior is thoughtfully designed and creates a pleasant atmosphere.
🧾 Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a place with great ambience, this might be worth a one-time visit. But if food quality, menu clarity, and fair pricing are priorities, you may want to explore...
