One of the few shops that reminds the nostalgia of childhood days and still continuing serving good snacks. Nice ambience, but food price ( chop) is huge, overpriced but its a heritage place, this shop is more than 100 years old. Netaji subhas chandra bose was a fan of this shop, they diatribute free Alur Chop on 23rd January. On every trip to Kolkata, this is one of the must to have stops. For the uninitiated the shop serves various kinds of fritters (তেলেভাজা - চপ). One of the tradition that it has - it serves free snacks on the morning of 23rd January, birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose , as he used to have snacks from this shop. A legendary snacks shop. It was frequented by Netaji and thus became popular. The quality of the snacks are quite good and a plethora of options are available if choosing the right one is taken into account. Have been wanting to go back here for years and finally I did. They didn't have the legendary Fuluri when I reached but they did have hot Beguni's being friend. Though everything is deep friend in oil but when you eat them you realise thay oil is not dripping from them and they have been strained very well after coming out of the frying pan. Spice level is just for adding flavour & not over the top as is the case with most joints these days. Apart from this you can also buy various types of packed namkeen which are equally good with not too much salt in them and no smell of oil or grease.

Bidhan Sarani ( earlier known as Cornwallis Street) is famous for Star theatre, Town school, Hatibagan Bazar, Bethune College etc. Here at number 158 is another landmark popularly known as 'Netajir Choper Dokan' is a land mark for the 'bhadralok' Bengali and one of the oldest “telebhaja” shops of Kolkata - The signboard shows the name as Lakshmi Narayan Shaw and Sons. In the year 1918 Khedu Shaw opened the shop. This makes it the centenary year of the shop. Khedu Shaw was a huge fan of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose who frequently visited the place during his Scottish Church student days. In Pre-Independent days, Khedu Shaw used to supply snacks for all the meetings of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with other fellow freedom fighters. From 1942 Khedu Shaw started secretly distributing snacks to all his friends and family members for free of cost on 23rd January, Netaji’s birthday. After Independence the tradition continued and from 1964 it started publicly distributing 'telebhaja' free of cost to others too on 23rd January and it continues even today. The shop is now owned and run by Mohan Gupta and his brother Kesto Kumar Gupta. It serves aloor chop, aam chop, dhoka barfi, soybean chop, narkel chop, Kashmiri chop and peyaji, among others. It serves all vegetarian chops. This Bengali delicacy has now come into the limelight with both the CM and the PM branding the fried delicacies as an industry.

Welcome to the Telebhaja king of Kolkata. Khedu Shaw started this establishment in 1918. Yes, Kolkata was different back then. The freedom movement was at the peak and this shop was known to be the den for information exchange. While many would think that people were having their evening adda with telebhaja from this place, the freedom fighters exchanged information. And it was during that period, Mr. Shaw first met Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose. He was so much impressed by the personality, that still today, Lakshmi Narayan Shaw distributes telebhaja free of cost on 23rd January each year- on the birthday of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, a practice started from 1942. Even today, many locals refer to this shop and its fritters as Netaji r peyaji. Telebhaja, or fritters, is anything quoted in Besan and deep-fried. It can be boiled potato mashed with spices for aloo chop or sliced onion as peyaji. The besan batter is generally spiced with nigella and seasoning. Items are dipped in it and deep-fried. Voila, the magical evening snacks for Kolkata is born. But the thing is not that simple at Lakshmi Narayan Shaw. they have many varieties. In fact, some of their most loved items are quite unique. For example, the aamer chop (made with seasonal raw mango to impart the tangy flavor) and soyabean cutlet are quite famous.

🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Iconic Bengali Snack Stop – Laxmi Narayan Shaw & Sons, Hatibagan

If you're in North Kolkata and haven't yet tasted the food from Laxmi Narayan Shaw & Sons, you're missing out on a piece of Kolkata’s culinary heritage. Located in Hatibagan, this legendary eatery is a local favorite known for its lip-smacking snacks and traditional Bengali delicacies.

✅ Food Quality & Taste: Every item here speaks of tradition and taste. Their vegetable chop, alur chop, and singara are crispy and delicious. The telebhaja (fried snacks) are always fresh and cooked in clean oil, which is a rare find these days. The flavor instantly reminds you of homemade snacks.

✅ Authenticity: The recipes have remained authentic for generations. There’s something very nostalgic about the food – it’s like going back to your childhood or visiting your grandparents' house in Kolkata.

✅ Hygiene & Cleanliness: The place is neat for a traditional street-side shop. Food is served quickly, and cleanliness is well maintained considering the crowd and rush.

✅ Price & Portion: Super affordable! Perfect for students, families, or anyone looking for budget-friendly yet satisfying snacks. The portions are generous, and the prices are very reasonable.

✅ Service & Staff: The staff are humble and efficient, even during rush hours. Despite the crowd, they manage orders smoothly and maintain calmness and courtesy.

✅ Location Advantage: Centrally located near Hatibagan market and close to Star Theatre, it’s a popular stop for shoppers and office-goers alike. Very easy to spot and well-connected via public transport.

💡 Pro Tips:

Try their beguni and peyaji in the evening – absolute must-haves! Go early in the evening before stock runs out, especially on weekends. Pair your snack with a cup of tea from the nearby tea stalls for the full experience.

🔚 Final Verdict: A timeless gem in Kolkata's street food culture, Laxmi Narayan Shaw & Sons continues to win hearts with their simplicity, quality, and tradition. A must-visit for every food lover in Kolkata.
