I visited the new Hatibagan outlet of Kolkata Rajbari on Dashami. We arrived around 1:30 PM and found a large crowd waiting outside. After registering our name, we were 39th on the list, with 33 currently being served, so we assumed it would take around 1-1.5 hours for our turn. We decided to wait nearby, outside a Puja pandal.
At 2:30 PM, we returned to the restaurant to check our status, only to find out that they were still serving number 28. The scene outside had become chaotic.
The chaos was caused for a group of 15 people who were allowed to enter without being listed in the logbook. The floor manager kept giving different excuses for them: first, he claimed their name was listed at number 5, then said they were from a councillor's family, and later that they were relatives of the restaurant owner. Meanwhile, those of us who had been waiting for hours with our families were left standing outside, while the 15-member group was seated and served almost immediately. This is completely unacceptable. A heated argument broke out between the floor manager and the frustrated customers. The manager was extremely rude and arrogant, even shouting at the crowd, saying, "Ami dhukte debo na apnader / khete debo na" (I won’t let you in / I won’t let you eat).
Who does he think he is to speak like that? People weren’t there for free food—they were paying customers. The whole incident was handled very poorly, and there wasn’t even an apology from the staff. The restaurant owner must take immediate action to address this situation.
Now, coming to the food—after waiting for 2 hours, we finally got a chance to enter the restaurant. We didn’t have many other options, as it was almost 3:30 PM and we were too hungry to look for another place.
Once inside, we met a couple who had entered the restaurant an hour before us, and they mentioned they hadn’t been served yet. Oddly, the table next to them had been empty the whole time since they arrived. It made us wonder why there was a fake crowd outside when so many tables were unoccupied.
We ordered the Mahabhoj thali (as no other options were available apart from à la carte), along with Methi Chicken and Basanti Pulao. The portion size was generous for two people.
The taste was good, but nothing extraordinary. The Basanti Pulao was excellent, and the two starters—Chatpata Prawn and Chicken Fingers—were quite tasty. But the mutton was disappointing—bland and lacking flavor.
Overall, the experience was pretty bad. We understand it was festival season and they had to handle a large crowd, but they should remain calm and treat customers with respect. Who knows what tomorrow will bring? Too much arrogance isn’t good for...
Read moreSituated at Hari Ghosh Street, near Hati Bagaan, this outlet of Kolkata Rajbari offers authentic Bengali cuisines. Keeping the traditional legacy alive, they offer you a holy welcome with Diya and flowers. They offer both thali and a-la- carte items. We are there people and have ordered one 'chingri thali' and two 'Bhoj thalis'. In the chingri thali, the items were Basmati Rice, rajbarir polao, jhuri aloo bhaja, macher matha diye daal/sona moong daal, special veg, special chanar dalna/mix veg, katla kalia (1 pc), Rajbarir Chingri Malaikari (2 pcs/1 jumbo), mutton kosh/Rajbarir special chicken, chutney, papad, payes. In the bhoj thali, the items were the same except the fact that, there was of course no Chingri and instead of Katla , there was Vetki bhapa (1 pc)/ Doi Bhetki. In both of the cases, there were welcome drinks which were served to us. The quantity of the food items were quite good. We liked the sukto the most among all the items, it was really fantastic! The rest of the items were also good but not extraordinary. The chicken and mutton were both very salty and the mutton pieces were not soft. The strange part is someone who refrains from mutton gets the same no of pieces of chicken and not more at the same price. So, having chicken here on the thali is absolutely a loss to the customer. Some of the veg items, rice and polao are repeated as complementary service. The thalis are non shareable. The food in the thali may sometimes feel too much, there should be options for some mini thali which can be offered at lower or more affordable prices. The behaviours of the staff members were professional but needed to be more soft and warm. The volume of the welcome drinks was very less. The ambience was very nice with many beautiful paintings and sculptures. The washroom design should have been better, it is quite small and the hand wash area is also very congested. Overall, it was a...
