I have very fond memories of feasting at a Kamaths restaurant in my younger days. Now, maybe I have grown old and my taste buds can't comprehend their complex tastes, but I am sure garbage tastes equally bad. Poora bachpan ki memories ka vaat kaga dala. This establishment has been around for a while now but I don't know how can they get away after serving such bad food. Perhaps, it's a dedicated highway joint and travellers on this stretch don't bother about giving compliments or complaining about the bad food. So, one day after a good workout we decided to check out this place. Now, usually, one is supposed to be hungry in the morning and can extract taste from almost anything post pumping iron. However, we were disappointed and couldn't order more than the humble idli and cheese masala dosa (yes, we are not careful eaters). The sambhar was pathetic. My wife usually takes extra chutney, irrespective of it being on the house or otherwise, but this time she didn't. She is my barometer for chutneys. When we asked whats special, they guided us to VITTHALVADA or KAMATVADA, which is like a sweet curd dipped BATATA VADA and some chutneys. That somehow was okayish in taste. But I have lost all my hopes for breakfast here. Maybe, someday will cautiously try out lunch. Note - they need to take care of their kitchen. There is an open-drain/slit in the ground. I wish I could give 0 rating for this horrible excuse of a hotel . To say that quality of Kamats restaurants has deteriorated is an understatement. This used to be my go to place while returning to Mumbai from my trips before hitting the Mum Pune expressway . I guess management and cook has changed. They have changed the system to self service where you hav to pay for the items first and then pass the bill to kitchen for your order to be delivered. Wanted to order tomato omelette, was informs by an arrogant scrawny guy behind the counter that it’s not there , then asked for Rawa Masala dosa , informed it’s not there as if he cares 2 hoots for customers. This being a Udupi / South Indian veg hotel , surprising that these items are not available. So ordered Tomata uttapam , pav bhaji & veg grilled sandwich . Total bill came to ₹560. Tomata uttapam has little invisible shreds of green tomatoes sprinkled to do me a favour . Had no salt to taste. Pan bhaji was pathetic , I could have cooked better . Bhaji was something made of flower , peas and some garam masala sprinkled over . Tasteless . Veg grilled sandwich was raw and the fillings not properly grilled. Below average taste and above average price. Ordered pav bhaji and bhaji was bland, had almost no salt. Price was double than local pav bhaji sellers with much better taste. When asked the waiter, he gave explanation that others have not given such complaint, great. We put ton of salt and ate. Ordered misal pav. Again, the blandest misal I had so far in pune compared to even much smaller shops. Ordered plain uttapam for my kid, they brought something which was cooked from both sides looking like Paratha. I was expecting something like set dosa. Again disappointed. Ordered sabudana wada, no need to say but again with minimum salt and very poor taste. Ordered tea and coffee.
