Martand Misal, located in the heart of the city, is a restaurant that truly captivates the essence of Maharashtrian cuisine through its specialty dish, misal. As a lover of spicy and flavorful food, I recently visited Martand Misal, and I must say that it was an experience to remember.
Upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted by a warm and inviting ambiance. The interiors were simple yet aesthetically pleasing, with photographs and paintings depicting the rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra adorning the walls. The friendly staff members were knowledgeable and provided excellent service throughout my visit.
Now, let's talk about the star of the show - the misal. Martand Misal's misal is an absolute delight for the taste buds. Served in a traditional brass bowl, the dish consisted of a fiery mixture of sprouts, lentils, farsan (savory mixtures), and topped with a generous amount of spicy misal gravy. The aroma itself was enough to awaken my senses.
The misal at Martand Misal comes in various levels of spiciness, catering to different palates. Being a spice enthusiast, I opted for the extra spicy version, and it did not disappoint. The flavors were robust and well-balanced, with each ingredient complementing the other. The crunchy farsan and sev added a wonderful texture to the dish, while the sprouts provided a fresh and healthy touch. The accompanying pav (bread) was soft and served as the perfect accompaniment to mop up every last bit of the flavorful gravy.
Apart from their signature misal, Martand Misal also offers a variety of other Maharashtrian delicacies. I had the opportunity to try their sabudana vada (tapioca fritters) and thalipeeth (multigrain pancake), both of which were exceptional. The vada was crispy on the outside and had a soft, flavorful center, while the thalipeeth was packed with the goodness of different grains and spices.
The pricing at Martand Misal is reasonable, considering the quality and quantity of the food served. The portion sizes were generous, ensuring that I left the restaurant with a satisfied appetite.
Overall, my experience at Martand Misal was fantastic. The restaurant not only offers delectable food but also manages to capture the essence of Maharashtra's culinary heritage. Whether you're a fan of spicy food or looking to explore authentic Maharashtrian cuisine, Martand Misal is definitely worth a visit. Just be prepared to have your taste buds tantalized and your senses awakened by the flavorsome...
Read moreI am, inadvertently, on a Misal tasting spree. I am coming across lot of specialised Misal serving places.
Martand Misal has its roots in Shukrawar Peth, Pune. They are known for their Misal & Special Tea & are on an expansion mode. They have opened a new branch at Lalbagh, Mumbai since February 14th, 2019.
The ambience is very basic with a simple table & chair arrangement. The walls are decorated with witty Marathi one-liners written on slates; they are famously known as "पुणेरी पाट्या"
They offer only Misal (with some interesting combinations) & Tea. The service is pretty quick & efficient.
I had ordered the Special Misal which is served in a huge plate. It has a big bowl of boiled & spiced potatoes with sprouts, chivda & farsan, a small bucket of spicy gravy, extra helping of sprouts & boondi, dahi, Gulab Jamun (2 pcs) & finely chopped onions & slice of lemon.
Misal is made from moth beans or matki as it is known in Marathi. The gravy was spicy but was watery with loads of red chilli & other spices. I found it to be a bit extra salty. This gravy is sure to give you a heart burn & maybe make you feel like a rocket the following day 😉
I had Chhaas or ताक as well, it was creamy and garnished with chopped green coriander & boondi.
This humble dish which started off as a poor man's wholesome meal has now become a hot cake item or a heart throb, so much that food are good festivals are organised only for Misal.
Honestly, it is a wholesome meal unto itself with all the right flavours to tiltilate the senses. The dish has proteins in the form of sprouts, potatoes provides carbohydrates, fat is provided by the oil used (sometimes used a bit generously in some places 😊)
Martand Misal is a welcome change on the restaurant scene, offering a variety of Misal's and they are doing a good...
