Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round for a tale of my culinary misadventure in the land of Malvani cuisine. I eagerly ordered the Surmai Thali and the Prawns Rawa Fry.
Now, brace yourselves, because the Prawns Rawa Fry were oily and as flavourful as cardboard. Marination? Well, that was apparently optional for these prawns.
But lo and behold, the Surmai Thali arrived, and for a brief moment, I was ready to forgive and forget. The chapati, Kismoor, and Solkadi were A1, top-notch, if you will. However, the Surmai fry was so oily and flavour? disappointed again. And don't get me started on the fish curry; that's not how Malvanis do it, that's not how my mom does it either. I swear, Malvani or Konkani fish curry is not just about dumping coconut purée and spices into a pot. In your fish curry, I could taste raw coconut purée, but where were the triphal and kokum? If your fish curry had triphal or kokum, you seriously need to have a chat with your supplier. I even have a kokum connection, an auntie in Kamothe with Heisenberg-level kokum – I can hook you up!
After finishing my not so enjoyable lunch, I couldn't resist but engage in a post-meal interrogation. Turning to my waiter, I asked the question that would perhaps explain the kitchen's painful efforts : "Where is the owner from?" His reply, "Satara." And that, dear readers, was the moment when I realized I had messed up royally by coming here.
Here's a thought: before attempting to master Malvani cuisine, maybe folks from Sangli, Satara and Kolhapur should consider sticking to chicken or mutton, where you guys are undeniably winners. I've sampled enough restaurants run by Sangli, Satara, and Kolhapur folks to confidently declare that, in my humble opinion, only our friends from Karnataka have the Midas touch when it comes to Malvani or Goan cuisine.
My advice to your kitchen staff? Visit some authentic Malvani or Goan joints. Or, better yet, befriend some Malvani or Goan folks (if you can find any).
In all fairness, I must admit, the restaurant's location is pretty good , the staff is as pleasant as a sea breeze, and the place is cleaner than my conscience after this meal.
The fish was undeniably fresh. While everything else went sideways, at least the fish quality was top-notch.
Now, dear restaurant, don't take this critique to heart; after all, Konkani cuisine isn't exactly rocket science. But a little extra training wouldn't hurt. Cheers to future culinary adventures, and here's hoping for more flavour and fewer culinary mishaps!
Yours...
Read moreNo matter how hardcore a foodie you are, what hits the core is your own native cuisine. It's something that you can't live without! Humble and homely Malvani cuisine is my culinary home. I need some good Malvani food whenever I crave for my native's loving touch. One fine day this craving grew wild and I had to order Malvani food and that's when 'Malvani Days' came to my rescue. This newly opened outlet in Kharghar serves a number of lip-smacking Malvani dishes made in an authentic manner. The dishes that I relished were as follows:-
Clams Masala Sukka - This was made with fresh clams, cooked with the choicest spices to perfection. The flesh was tender and the feeling was enjoyable. 8/10 Surmai Curry- Signature Malvani fish curry made using Surmai, it was luscious and so flavourful. The amalgamation of sourness from Kokum and spiciness from Malvani 'vatan' was a superhit! 9.5/10 Kolambi Masala- This dish is my personal favorite Prawns preparation of all times! Prawns tenderly cooked in the bhuna paste of cut onions, tomatoes and Malvani Masala, it's simply mind blowing! Complete 10/10! Chicken Pakoda- Who doesn't like fried chicken? If you get it in pakoda style with Malvani touch as a plus, there's no way to deny the treat. Chicken Pakodas were so juicy on the inside and crispy hot on the outside. Would go really well with any desired drink. 10/10. Chicken Biryani- Winner Winner Biryani Dinner! Need I say any further? Chicken Biryani in, satisfaction in! It was a delightful Biryani, moderately spiced and well balanced with flavours. 9/10 Rice Bhakari- Non-vegetarian Malvani delicacies are incomplete if not coupled with steaming hot and soft Rice Bhakari. Went very well with all the preparations, just the way it should have been. 10/10. Gulab Jamun- Luscious, soft and perfectly soaked sweet goodness, it marked the perfect end to...
