Read moreCalling Mumbai my most favourite city in India and not having dined in an Irani Cafe is a monstrous miss. Which is why on the recent visit to Pune the first meal was planned here. Being a vegetarian that day wasn’t very limiting as the vegetarian omelette was really delicious and so was the paneer bhurji, a perfect replacement for a Parsi Akuri. After sampling all this, along with a very sweet and strong Irani chai was a great breakfast experience, but what beat it was the Irani black chai with mint accompanied by some dates, truly remarkable combination, that I loved, and the best part was it was complimentary, at least I think it was.
Having tried the bun maskas from the chai chains in Bengaluru, had not prepared me for the OG bun maska here, the super soft pillowy bread hiding creamy yellow butter was absolutely stunning, no wonder classics such as this stay relevant even today.
The vegetable cutlets were superbly well made, the thin crispy layer with a beautiful filling that was masaledar and had a tinge of chaat masala high on amchur / dry mango powder. The chili cheese toasts were a different league altogether, red chilli flakes and cheese stuffed soft white bread is what very good mornings are made up of, salty cheese, spicy chili, balancing white bread, fantastic toast with chai.
My first experience at an Irani cafe and I loved the whole experience of dining in a place of historical significance, from classics such as bun maska and Irani chai, can’t wait to head to Mumbai soon , for indulging in a full blown meal from...
Read moreThese cafes have a legacy past 50 to 60 years. Until now when two brothers decided to continue to show case the culture and food of the Iran they started up with these Retro Modern Cafes. The modern Irani cafes which you see now are having the same old feel as they were having when they were ran by their fathers and grandfathers
Bun Maska They serve quite a lot of variety of bun maska here. The bun was amazing, it had the subtle sweetness to it and a good flaky texture. The bun maska had lots of butter in it. The Bun maska jam had butter as well as jam. Broon Is a crisper version of bun. Broon outer part is hard and crisp and the inner side is soft. I personally like the bun maska.
Chicken Samosa This is a special Irani samosa which only Few Places serve. This is samosa which has filling made from some cabbage and chicken. They had sautéed the cabbage and chicken first and then wrapped in the sheet of samosa and fried. The main different of normal samosa as the crust had a sheet wrapped around forming 2 3 layers which gave it a flaky texture. This was good but a bit oily.
Mutton Kheema Kheema is one of my favourite breakfast items. The mutton mince was fine. It was surprising less oily. The spice level for this was mild which was perfect as breakfast dish. Kheema was topped with half fry egg. The kheema had a subtle garam masala flavour. this flavour would hit you after you chew whole the bite. This is...
