An authentic Maharashtrian Thali is a must have when you visit Pune and there are several options for you to indulge and the highly recommended one was Maratha Samrat. We visited the outlet in Camp for lunch and I settled for a vegetarian thali, which came with
Wangi Batata Rassa - A spicy brinjal and potato curry Sukki Bhaaji - Dry vegetable preparation Bhakri - A flat round millet flatbread Dal Palak - Lentil and spinach gravy Phodniche Varan - A comforting lentil curry Indrayani Rice - A very unique sticky rice with an interesting flavour and texture Dahi - Curd Kanda & Limbu - Onions and lemon Shrikhand - A sweet sour creamy yogurt dessert
Based on ayurvedic principles, the thali was a true representation of Maharashtra as there were elements from the various regions combined to give you a delicious sample of the region, in a sweet, sour, savoury, spicy and bitter platter beautifully represented.
I know that Maharashtrian cuisine is known for its spicy dishes, but this Thali at its spiciest best, from the mildly subdued versions that I have experienced outside Maharashtra. I think the Sankeshwari chili from Maharashtra is in use here, which is touted as the one of the spiciest red Indian chili. I loved this wonderful spicy meal, where the bhakri brought in a balance to the spicy curries that went well with the unique sticky Indrayani rice. This is the first time I am introduced to this type of Indian rice, and loved how the texture reminded me of a millet ball, and is also extremely healthy because of its low glycemic index.
I was extremely content and satisfied indulging in this meal that was fulfilling to the soul and I keep wondering at the diversity India has in its cuisine, and not just people. Highly recommend Maratha Samrat for you to experience a slice of...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of dining at Maratha Samrat restaurant in Pune Camp. I was looking for an authentic Maharashtrian meal, and I was not disappointed. The food was delicious, the service was attentive, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting.
I started my meal with the kala mutton, which is a slow-cooked dish that is made with black peppercorns and other spices. The mutton was incredibly tender and flavorful, and the gravy was rich and delicious. I also had the mutton kharda fry, which is a stir-fry dish that is made with mutton, onions, tomatoes, and spices. The mutton was cooked perfectly, and the vegetables were crisp and flavorful. Both main courses were good, but I would say the kala mutton was slightly better.
For my main course, I had the jwari bhakri, which is a type of flatbread that is made with sorghum flour. The bhakri was served with a variety of chutneys and curries, and it was the perfect accompaniment to my meal. I also had the solkadi, which is a refreshing drink that is made with buttermilk, yogurt, and spices.
The service at Maratha Samrat was excellent. Our waiter was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. He was happy to make recommendations, and he made sure that we had everything we needed.
The atmosphere at Maratha Samrat is relaxed and inviting. The restaurant is decorated in a traditional Maharashtrian style, and the staff is friendly and welcoming.

Read moreYou know, I almost thought I won't write a review as the place already has so many and mostly positive ones. Then I said, naa, this place has got to have a fantastic review that describes the flavor.
My second or third time here. Where I live, we have something that is 'claimed' to be Indian food but honestly, it's the ultimate pinnacle of mediocracy (unless you do not mind paying with your chopped head, both hands and both feet and even then, there's no guarantee). So coming to Maratha Samrat was a TREAT.
I ordered the Black Mutton Thali. Never done the thali before but am so glad I did. The rasaas; I won't say how many refills I had as I am embarassed but the flavors were OUTSTANDING. The white rasaa had the slight spiciness to it with a rich flavor while the red one was a bit more spicy but yet had full flavor.
The kaali mutton; uska mein kya bataoon yaar? That mutton meat coated with the goda masala having absorbed the gravy; you put that in your mouth and bite the tender piece of meat. Yaar swarg mil gaya. My only complaint; they need to give more of this dish in the thali.
The other mutton (I'm not sure what it is called) was equally good. Then the mutton keema. Oyheee oyheeee oyheeeeeeee. That keema is SOOOO GOOD. It melts in your mouth.
What was different that I have never tried before was the onion mixed with curd. That was so good.
If I was living here, I would come here at least twice a week till I tried everything they have on their menu.
The service here too was vah...
