I visited The Fat & The Sexy Chef to attend a curated “porky” get-together of a Filipino Feast organized by the Pune-chapter of The Calcutta Pork Addicts. Having previously lived in the Philippines, Ravi (owner and chef) is utterly familiar with the Filipino food, and we got generous portions of the signature dishes with pronounced sweet and sour flavours. The plates were gorgeous, the (imported) pork flavourful and delicate, igniting that love-affair with this meat.
We started with Lumpa Shanghai, crunchy spring rolls filled with pork and prawn mince. The pastry sheet was thin, non-greasy, the beautiful mince very fine with the salad. I put spoonful of the rich, dark soya sauce onto the rolls. A perfect starter, I say.
I absolutely loved the tangy-sour, light broth, Pork Sinigang, with thinly sliced immersed portions of lightly roasted pork belly, cherry tomatoes, string beans, greens. The tamarind excites the taste buds combined with veggies and pork.
The restaurant marinates the pork chops for 48 hours to slow cook with whole spices, soya sauce, vinegar and garlic, to serve this must-have national dish, Pork Adobo, paired with sticky rice and ‘atchara’ (pickled carrots and raw papaya). I have not had more succulent pork, the hearty stew (thickened, dark sweet soya, vinegar) making it delicious with sticky rice.
Tummies satiated, it was impossible to resist the playful, absolutely indulgent Halo Halo, with all things memorable – sweet yam, two kinds of jelly, moong and sweet beans, young coconut shavings, condensed milk, and leche flan. This hit a sweet spot, as an engrained memory.
A no-fuss restaurant, The Fat and The Sexy Chef, is that neighborhood place that you repeatedly return to satiate your cravings, converse with Ravi and Dolly, watch over your meal being put together. The portions are large, and they have an extensive menu of – Thai, Indonesian, Asian curries, noodles and bowls, pizza and pasta, steaks, Mexican usuals, burgers,...
Read moreI stumbled upon Fat and Sexy Chef, and I'm so glad I did! I ordered the Korean Ramen, which was priced at ₹440 - a bit steep, but it was exactly what I was craving.
The couple running the place is incredibly friendly and welcoming. I initially thought they were closed, but fortunately, they were open for business. The space is cozy and intimate, but don't let that fool you - they pack a flavorful punch!
From what I gathered, they specialize in pork dishes, and I'm eager to try more of their offerings.
Overall, great food, lovely service, and a hidden gem of a spot....
Read moreThese folks really know what cooking lovely food is all about. They are a sweet couple serving customers with a smile on their faces. The menu is full of a variety that will spoil you for choice. We tried pork and chicken options, which we loved. They are small on seating space which affects the ambience quotient and this most orders are for delivery. But with a Lil work, it can be turned into a lovely, cosy cafe. But the bottom-line, the food is...
