Our experience at Taste of Tibet in Gangtok was nothing short of a disaster. We decided to try their chicken thupka, and it turned out to be absolutely horrifying. The dish was not only stinky but also had a terrible smell that was hard to ignore. The broth, a crucial element of thupka, was far from up to the mark. What made our disappointment even more frustrating was the fact that we had previously enjoyed a wonderful meal at Taste of Tibet in Dharamshala. We expected a similar level of quality here in Gangtok, but it was a far cry from our earlier experience. To make matters worse, when we brought the subpar quality of our meal to the attention of the waiter and even the manager, they exhibited a cold and indifferent attitude. They didn't seem to care about our concerns, and this lack of customer service only added to our frustration. In summary, we strongly advise against dining at Taste of Tibet in Gangtok. Our visit was marred by the terrible food, a significant drop in quality compared to their branch in Dharamshala, and the disappointing response from the staff when we raised our concerns. This restaurant is not worth your time or money.

Place had no redeeming qualities. The place was dingy and unhygienic. The service was average but the food was the worst thing I tasted in my life. I ordered a pork thukpa and chicken momos but they didn’t have chicken momos so I went for the pork momos. The thukpa - was horrible. Tasted like they just put store bought Hakka noodles in water and dropped some vegetables. The soup tasted like water with flour noodles. THE WORST PART ABOUT IT WAS THE MEAT WAS UNHYGIENIC, THE PORK HAD CARTILAGES,BONES,SKIN AND FAT. IT LOOKED BLACK IN COLOUR AND THAT WAS SO CONCERNING. I CAN ONLY IMAGINE HOW UNHYGIENIC THEIR KITCHEN MUST BE. The pork momos - the pork was unclean. I could taste the rawness of the animal because it was not cooked properly. I don’t know much about Tibetan food but I know for sure that their soup broths don’t taste like water. Don’t go on its cheap menu. I wouldn’t pay 50 rupees also for those kind of momos. I would think twice before giving them to my dog as well.

Want view? Take the table on the right near the window.. If you're in MG road, Gangtok and want to tast some good Tibetian food, this is the place. It has excellent vibes, the service is good, staff is knowledgeable and the best part, the food is amazing. Combine the above with some HIT beer and your meals is done. PS: Tibetian food is a little bland. If you're expecting it to be full of masalas then you'll be disappointed. Many of the dishes won't even have good amount of salt. This restaurant is famous and usually there's a wait. So be on time and grab the table. Or else usually you'll end up waiting for long The servers are knowledgeable and go with their recommendations. They know their local food better than the tourists. You'll find a lot of foreigners here. If you're a vegetarian you have good amount of dishes but many many not be of your palatte. If you want the view take the table on the right near the window

Nestled in the heart of the city, Test of Tibet Restaurant offers a unique dining experience that brings the flavors, culture, and warmth of Tibetan cuisine to the table. From the moment you step inside, you are welcomed by a cozy and peaceful atmosphere. The interiors are decorated with Tibetan art, prayer flags, and warm lighting, which create an inviting environment that makes you feel at ease. The seating is comfortable, and the staff greets every guest with genuine smiles and hospitality, setting the tone for a memorable dining experience.

The menu at Test of Tibet is both extensive and authentic, featuring a range of traditional Tibetan dishes that cater to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians. One of the highlights is, of course, the famous momos. These soft dumplings, filled with either vegetables, chicken, or mutton, are perfectly steamed and served with a spicy dipping sauce that enhances their flavor. The restaurant also serves fried and pan-fried versions for those who prefer a crispier bite. Another must-try dish is thukpa, a hearty Tibetan noodle soup that is perfect for cold evenings. The broth is rich and flavorful, filled with fresh vegetables, noodles, and tender meat or tofu, making it both satisfying and comforting.

For those looking to explore more, the shapta (stir-fried meat with peppers and onions) and tingmo (Tibetan steamed bread) are excellent choices. The shapta is well-seasoned with just the right balance of spices, while the tingmo is fluffy and pairs wonderfully with gravies. Vegetarian guests will also find plenty of options, from stir-fried greens to butter tea and sweet Tibetan desserts. Each dish is prepared with care, reflecting the authenticity of Tibetan home-style cooking.

The quality of food at Test of Tibet is complemented by the service. The staff is attentive yet unobtrusive, always ready to explain the dishes to first-time visitors. They patiently guide guests through the menu, suggesting combinations that work well together. Orders are served promptly, and everything arrives hot and fresh, which adds to the satisfaction of the meal.

The restaurant also strikes a balance between affordability and quality. The prices are reasonable considering the portion sizes and authenticity of the dishes. Whether you are a student, a traveler, or a family dining out, Test of Tibet ensures value for money.

Another standout aspect of the restaurant is its dedication to creating a cultural experience, not just a meal. Tibetan music often plays softly in the background, and the décor immerses guests in the culture. The peaceful vibe makes it an ideal spot for casual dinners, family gatherings, or even solo dining.

In conclusion, Test of Tibet Restaurant is more than just a place to eat; it is a doorway into Tibetan culture and hospitality. With delicious food, friendly service, and an authentic atmosphere, it leaves a lasting impression on anyone who visits. Whether you are already a fan of Tibetan cuisine or are trying it for the first time, this restaurant is a must-visit. It delivers on its promise of offering the true “taste of Tibet” in...

Edit: I didn't want to add anything to what I witnessed at your place, but because you chose to reply and used uncouth and uncalled for language, I must write here that both the food and management are subpar. Also, your management and waiting staff consist of young people, they can't be more than 20-22 years of age. Are you trying to say that all of them started working there in 1998? The moment they were born, they started working in your restaurant? Also, the lady who sits at the cash register was downright rude to people. I haven't seen any restaurant manager who yells at customers, yours was the first one. When someone is trying to tell you about an issue, you should learn from it rather than provide 'your kind information' to them. Awful behaviour.

It's a cramped place but that is justified if the food is good but here that wasn't the case. Most of the high reviews are from the past when it might be good. We got to know from a local person that the chef has changed and so has the management, and that has caused a dip in service, food, and general management.

Time runs at glacial pace here as they take their sweet time in delivering things on the table.

Edit: Date 23 Oct 2022 Just look at the response of this person. "For your kind information", there is no humility there and thus no experience in how to handle customers and take criticism. It reinforces not only the salty experience but also cements the belief that what one sees on the visit is how they are in real life too. Not at all recommended. There are better places...

Located right on MG Marg, Taste of Tibet is a legendary little eatery that’s earned a loyal following for serving some of the best steamed momos in Gangtok. While the place is small and often packed, it’s worth every bit of the wait.

The restaurant sits above street level, and getting there involves climbing a narrow staircase—watch your head if you’re tall! Inside, the space is tight and usually buzzing with hungry diners. Seating is basic, and you might have to wait a while for a table, especially during lunch or evening hours. But once you’re in, you’ll understand why this humble spot draws a crowd.

The steamed momos here are the star. Soft, fresh wrappers envelop juicy, flavorful fillings—whether you go for pork, chicken, or vegetable, they’re consistently delicious. Each plate comes with their signature spicy chutney, a tangy, fiery blend that perfectly complements the dumplings. It’s the kind of heat that keeps you reaching for more.

The menu also includes Tibetan staples like thukpa and shapta, but most people come here for the momos—and for good reason. Despite the tight space and occasional elbow bump, the food speaks for itself.

If you’re in Gangtok and craving authentic Tibetan flavors, Taste of Tibet is a must-visit. Come with patience, a healthy appetite, and a love for simple,...
