Tl;dr: Come for the coffee, stay for the Bermiok tea/muffins and keep returning for the excellent Lephing.
Dissapointed with the usual suspects on Gangtok's premier walking mall MG Marg, I found myself cautiously strolling into The Local Cafe on a rainy Wednesday afternoon in search of some strong coffee and a non-mediocre morsel or two. This place certainly lifted my spirits. The double shot espresso was rich even if a tad bit acidic and came with a respectable Shrewsbury stand-in cookie. Next came the showstopper. The most perfectly-timed Lephing I've ever had. Spicy, cold and easy. I understand the perils when I say I liked it better than samples served in Delhi's Majnu Ka Tilla but I will still do so. While the MKT ones undeniably seem like they were made by your best friend's mother, the one at The Local Cafe seems like it was made by the friend who took that recipe and gave it the finesse and technique you'd expect if you were paying for it. Strongly recommend. Next up, a giant cup of pleasantly fragrant Bermiok tea quickly became the defining beverage of the session which came to a close with Monaco Chicken - basic chicken salad on Monaco biscuits done right. For purely academic purposes, I took home a vanilla cupcake and wasn't disappointed. The succint menu had a few other items that deserved exploration but I had to move on. Do give this quaint, thought-through and well-curated...
Read moreThere’s something special about small local spots that focus on doing a few things really well—and this little café in Gangtok is exactly that. Known among locals and travelers for its flavorful laphing, it offers a quick, spicy, and satisfying taste of Tibetan street food culture.
Their laphing comes in both dry and soupy versions, with just the right kick of chili, vinegar, and garlic. It’s cold, chewy, spicy, and incredibly addictive. You can also choose stuffed laphing with soya or extra spice if you’re feeling bold. It’s not just a snack—it’s a full flavor experience.
Alongside laphing, the café also serves kimbap, a Korean-style rice roll that’s fresh, light, and great if you’re looking for a balanced vegetarian option. It’s a fun contrast to the boldness of laphing, and both dishes pair beautifully with a cup of Tibetan butter tea—salty, creamy, and perfect for cutting through the spice.
The vibe is simple and casual. You might find just a few stools or low tables, but there’s a warmth in the air—locals chatting, food being freshly prepared, and that unmistakable aroma of chili and sesame oil.
Whether you’re on a food walk or just craving something quick and unforgettable, this spot is a must for laphing lovers. Affordable, authentic, and full of flavor—it’s Tibetan street food...

I recently visited The Local Café on MG Road, Gangtok, and had a wonderful experience. The café has a warm and inviting ambiance, making it a perfect spot to relax amidst the lively street.
I tried their Cappuccino, Lemon Ginger Tea, and Green Tea, and each drink was excellent. The cappuccino was rich and smooth, while the Lemon Ginger Tea had a refreshing zing—perfect for a cozy break. The Green Tea was light and soothing. I also appreciated that they served hot water in a glass, which was a thoughtful touch, especially in the chilly weather.
For snacks, I had a Butter Croissant and Potato Wedges. The croissant was flaky, buttery, and fresh, while the potato wedges were crispy on the outside and soft inside, served with a delicious dip. A perfect combination!
The staff was friendly and attentive, and the service was quick yet relaxed. The overall atmosphere, with its cozy seating and warm lighting, made it a great place to enjoy a quiet moment.
