Black Penny Restaurant — Restaurant in Bali

Such a pleasant surprise! We arrived at our accomodation and were desperate for something to eat. We stumbled upon this place, and got more than we bargained for! It is tucked right away, and we gasped once walking into the restaurant. The view over the valley is absolutely phenomenal; A hidden gem. We were the only ones eating in the restaurant too, and had a world class view. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the Pizzas and Cheesecake. (Wish I got photos of them! Best pizzas and cheesecake we've had in a very long time... if not ever!) We just had to return the following day, and I'm sure we will again. Sri especially, is so warm, attentive and friendly, and feels like a friend Annie is absolutely wonderful too, and was even kind enough to offer to take a photo of me and my partner. But everyone working here is absolutely lovely. The music, sound of water, plants, food, decoration and view are all perfect; and I'm sure we will be back yet again. While Black Penny Restaurant has an amazing view, the food was rather disappointing. The quality nor quantity is not what I’d expect from the high prices being charged. This is particularly relevant to the desserts (I tried the Volcano cake and Orange Cake). The dessert portions are ridiculously tiny and the Orange Cake I ordered was mostly inedible since it was burnt. The staff didn’t offer to remove the fee for the cake, so I had to make my point in order for it to be removed from my bill. Also, the kitchen and front-end staff were rather noisy which detracted from the peaceful ambience of the place.

I’m summary, your money goes much further in many of the top restaurants and cafes in Ubud center. I expect more from a pricey menu...

The only comment is that there are a lot of bugs because of the surrounding jungle, so you need to use a lot of bug spray and insect repellent. Other than this the staff are very friendly and they respond quickly to any request or complaint with very high level of proficiency. We had a very pleasant stay and we wish we could have stayed...
