The Indonesian food here is delicious. It isn’t the cheapest place around, but still cheaper than the upmarket Western places and gives a nicer restaurant atmosphere than the cheaper hole in a wall Warungs.
The lady who I presume was the owner was very friendly and chatty and kept my wife entertained when I went out to withdraw money at an ATM.
My wife had an Ayam Bakso (chicken meatball soup) and I ordered the Nasi Campur (rice and mixed dishes chosen from the cabinet). We shared a Gado Gado (mixed steamed vegetables and rice cakes with peanut sauce). We also had two drinks.
The Gado Gado was the nicest one we had in Bali, very fresh with a rich flavourful peanut sauce. My wife’s Bakso was delicious.
All the dishes in the nasi campur were great. Especially the Rendang Sapi. Although they are often all served room temperature which might not be to everyone’s liking.
You have to make sure you don’t get too greedy like me though. The proteins are more expensive and you get charged for every item you choose. Our total charges were $300,000 for the two drinks, Bakso, Gado Gado and Nasi Campur. $150,000 was for the Nasi Campur alone as I wanted to try a little bit of everything in the cabinet. I got charged the flat rate for every item even though I only got a little bit of everything. Make sure you only get one protein and a couple of vegetables otherwise it gets expensive. Especially if you choose the Rendang Sapi (dry beef curry).
Still the flavours were great. The receipt was itemised for every dish I chose. But they didn’t have prices listed on the dishes in the glass cabinet. It was a bit of a surprise when I got my receipt that my Nasi Campur was equal in price to the other two dishes and two drinks.
Prices on the glass cabinet might be a good idea in future so that foreigners who don’t know how it works can be sure of how much they...
Read moreWe visited Teh Manis in Canggu twice during our trip, once for lunch and once for dinner. The restaurant only serves halal food, which is great.
For lunch, we arrived a little late (after 2pm), so the nasi campur dishes on display weren’t very fresh anymore. Instead, we ordered one bakso with chicken and one bakso with beef. The portions weren’t large, but just right for us, and both tasted delicious, we left happy and satisfied.
Because of that good experience, we decided to come back for dinner. This time we ordered chicken soto and fried noodles with chicken. Unfortunately, the soto soup wasn’t hot enough and didn’t taste as fresh as lunch. On top of that, my fried noodles order was forgotten. I had to wait quite a while and finally ask the staff to follow up. Our table was right in front of the cashier counter, but no one checked on us until I raised it. When they finally followed up with the kitchen, it was clear the order had been missed. We could even hear the cook quickly preparing it after the reminder (the wok sound gave it away). The noodles turned out tasty, but the long delay did drop our mood.
That said, the staff handled it gracefully. When my husband went to pay, a gentleman approached us and kindly offered complimentary dessert to take away as an apology for the inconvenience. We really appreciated that thoughtful gesture.
Overall, the food was great and the service was generally good, just a small human error during dinner, which can happen anywhere. Because of the nice gesture and tasty food, we still rate Teh Manis 4/5 and will...
