Back in 2016, I was just a high school kid, navigating the treacherous waters of teenage life. After school, my daily ritual was pretty much set in stone—head home, toss my bag somewhere it didn’t belong, and dive straight into YouTube. Now, this was back when YouTube was basically ruled by American creators, especially in the gaming scene. If you were looking for Indonesian YouTubers, well, good luck—there just weren’t that many making waves yet.
I’d watch anything and everything: sports highlights, gaming compilations, random fun facts, documentaries, even the occasional educational video when I was feeling extra studious (or pretending to be). Then, one day, I stumbled upon this animated storytime guy, TheOdd1sOut. His content? Simple, funny, and downright addictive. The way he animated and narrated his life? Chef’s kiss—it had me hooked. But what really stuck with me was his whole "Sooubway" saga. The dude used to work at Subway, and he made it sound like an absolute fever dream. Naturally, that got me thinking—what does a Subway sub even taste like?
Flash forward to 2021—Subway finally opened near my house, and let me tell you, I was hyped. After years of only knowing it through TheOdd1sOut’s chaotic work stories, I could finally experience the real deal. My parents and I made the pilgrimage to the new spot, and I ordered my first footlong like it was some kind of rite of passage.
And you know what? It was… decent. Not life-changing, not disappointing—just a solid sandwich. But still, it felt surreal, like I had unlocked some kind of hidden achievement. What really caught me off guard was the size. I mean, nobody warned me that a footlong was, you know, actually a FOOT long. I barely made it through the whole thing before tapping out, stuffed beyond belief.
Now here we are in 2024, and nostalgia hit me like a freight train. I decided to go back to that exact same Subway, this time with my wife. But man, things had changed. Back in 2021, the place was buzzing—you had to fight for a spot in line. Now? Crickets. It was a Saturday night, prime time for a food court crowd, and yet... barely a soul in sight. Just a few folks grabbing sandwiches like they were in some secret club.
Still, I was excited. I ordered my footlong, took that first bite, and boom—instant nostalgia. It was like revisiting an old friend, one that hadn't changed much, but somehow, you appreciated them even more. Same taste, same feeling, same satisfaction.
Now, I won’t lie—the service was kinda slow. Not painfully slow, but definitely slower than I’d like. But you know what? I can’t even be mad. The experience alone was worth it. So, despite the tumbleweed vibes and the leisurely pace of the workers, I’m still giving it a 5/5.
No complaints. No regrets. Just hoping they don’t shut it down before my next nostalgic craving...
Read moreDon't let the Subway brand fool you, this is nothing like the actual Subway that we have grown to love in the US, or even in Asian countries like HK or SG. The "steak" on the Steak & Cheese was tough and tasted more a cross between meat and bakso. The "BBQ sauce" on the Spicy Italian tastes more like kecap manis than actual BBQ Sauce -- tasted so bad I couldn't even swallow the rest of my sandwich and threw it in the trash. The bread has a different texture and consistency vs other parts of the world -- funny enough it tasted more like Quiznos bread than Subway bread, which is weird because every where else I've had Subway, the bread has always been the same. Overall very disappointing, an example of a good brand and product ruined by clutter marketing and trying too hard to please the market. At this price point, I can think of a few local sandwich places that are far better. 2 stars instead of 1 because the...
Read moreDelicious sandwiches with many meat and veggie options.
