Food tastes undoubtedly good and is also priced very reasonable for big helpings offered. Thoroughly cooked, perfectly spiced, the kitchen did a fine and more than satisfying job. However during the day of my visit, the choices of both the Tengkleng and the Tongseng (with mutton) were both out, rendering the perfectly planned final evening activity at Yogyakarta of specifically visiting this place for the dish pointless. Not only that, half of the menu was out. The tables were dirty and were not cleaned until half an hour into the visit. Granted, to be fair, the place was teeming with people. The long-awaited food came 2 hours later, and only after my constant buggering of the attendants on duty, who neither responded politely nor helpfully. The drinks were not served until AFTER the food came. The system of ordering is not friendly at all; instead of a person-to- person service, it was an over-the-counter service. It would work if only there was not only one attendant on duty (I cannot blame her for the utter chaos, as she was trying her best, the management was responsible) while the two others were simply watching over the cash box, which was already placed two feet behind anyone's capable reach. Not only that, the system of lining up was not customer-friendly at all, as there is no clear line to follow and the attendant herself does not respect the first-come-first-serve concept.
When you have to wrestle your way and shout just to order from a very limited range of menu and wait for 120 minutes (half of that spent not being able to use the tables to rest your arms as they were still dirty), it is hard for me to give this restaurant more...
Read moreThis was my first time eating tengkleng in my life.
Stubbornly coming here 30 minutes before closing for the sake of being impressed by well-chosen tengkleng, not a random one, I expected to be in rush.
The place is nice. It's spacious, and not too crowded. It does have a clear flow of ordering, with attentive staffs who love to joke around me (it's rare to see a female cashier and waitress initiate a running gag).
When I saw the menu, I thought it's quite pricy, especially since the place is popular and they claim their tengkleng as "tengkleng no. 1 di dunia" (world's number 1 tengkleng). With no prior knowledge what tengkleng is, I thought IDR 48k for a portion of tengkleng was expensive.. and the rice? IDR 8k? Meh. We also ordered sate goreng (fried skewer meats) and jeroan goreng sambal bawang (fried inerts with onion sambal).
Unexpectedly, when the dishes came, I could say it's worth the price. Each portion of menu ordered is able to be shared with another one or even two persons. We loved how various the inerts are and the sambal bawang complements the dish too. That 8k rice?? You can see on some points in the restaurant that we can scoop your own portion of rice with that IDR 8k! It's impossible not to be full after eating here.
I love that they didn't rush us when we're eating even though it's their closing time. My first time eating tengkleng in Tengkleng Gajah was perfection. Even though it's my first time and haven't had a competition, I think it'll be hard to compete with this quality tengkleng place. Is it true that it's the number 1 tengkleng in the world?...
Read moreThis restaurant that sells many lamb dishes. You could get lamb satay, fried lamb satay, gule, tongseng, tengkleng, etc here. Gule, tengkleng, and tongseng are both local curry-like dishes with a slight differences.
Gule and tengkleng both using coconut milk, with Gule using thicker one. Tengkleng is using meat that sticks to the bones, Gule is using only meat (but this restaurant serves innards/jeroan gule too), while tengkleng is similar to gule but then it is being cooked furthermore with veggies, peppers and sweet soy sauce/kecap manis, hence there is a sweet notes there.
Actually Jogja is not famous for its lamb dishes, Solo is. But since this restaurant went viral, it became one of tourist's favorite culinary destination and I think it is deserved to be the one.
The meat cooked very well that it become so tender and not smelly (lamb could gave unpleasant smell if not cooked properly), seasoning is very good so that you could ended up taking more than a plate of rice, since you could refill the rice as much as you like here.
Service was good, they served the food real quick. I did not recommend to go alone here, since the portion (and price 👀) is more suitable for sharing, of course you could still eat it by yourself. Last time I went there, spend IDR 200K++ for 3 menus, 4 plates of rice, and 4 beverages.
