As the name suggests, Sate Klopo is taken from the Javanese language, which means coconut satay. So this Surabaya-style sate klopo is beef and fat satay wrapped in coconut-processed spices and then grilled. This layer is what makes it unique. The processed spices give off a distinctive aroma and add a delicious taste to the roast beef. Usually coconut satay is served with rice cake or rice. From early morning to midnight Sate Klopo Surabaya is very popular. This is what makes visitors willing to queue long enough and often run out at the shop. One of the most famous Sate Klopo stalls in Surabaya is the Sate Klopo Ondomohen shop or which is now on Jalan Mayor Mustajab. The name Ondomohen itself comes from the Dutch language. Ondomohen comes from the name of the street where this shop was first established. Currently, even though the street name has changed, this shop still uses the name Ondomohen because it has long been in the hearts of customers. Ondomohen satay shop was founded by Ibu Asih. By now, the person was old. The Ondomohen satay shop was only open from 6 am to 1 pm. Then, since the number of customers has increased, the opening hours are 6.30 to 11.30 pm. For information, the shop not only provides coconut satay, there is also chicken satay which is no less delicious and tender. For the price, all satay there is around Rp. 20,000 per portion. Each serving, buyers will get ten skewers with an additional choice of rice or lontong.

Sate Kelopo Ondomohen Bu Asih, located on Jalan Walikota Mustajab, is a renowned culinary spot in Surabaya that specializes in a unique twist on traditional satay. Known for its coconut-infused satay, the place offers an interesting take on a classic Indonesian dish that has captured the attention of both locals and tourists alike.

The flavor of the satay is undoubtedly good, with the grated coconut adding a smoky, nutty aroma that enhances the overall taste. The meats are tender, well-marinated, and grilled to perfection, creating a delightful balance of sweetness and savory notes. However, despite its uniqueness and delicious flavor, the pricing might feel a bit steep for some diners compared to other satay options in the city. While the experience is worthwhile, it’s worth noting that affordability could be a concern, especially for those on a tighter budget.

The establishment itself provides a traditional and nostalgic vibe, which adds to the charm of dining here. The service is efficient, and the staff are friendly and accommodating, ensuring that guests feel welcomed. However, during peak hours, the wait time can be longer, so planning ahead is advisable.

Overall, Sate Kelopo Ondomohen Bu Asih offers a delightful culinary experience that is worth trying, especially for those curious about this specialty. While the price point may not be the most budget-friendly, the unique flavors and quality of the food make it a memorable dining option...

Sate Klopo is a traditional culinary treasure from Surabaya. The name comes from the unique way the satay is prepared—grilled with a spice mixture blended with grated coconut (klopo in Javanese, meaning coconut). We’ve tried this several times since my college days a few years ago, and it used to be one of my go-to spots for satay.

However, on my recent visit, the taste seemed a bit different—it wasn’t as savory and rich as I remember. The chicken satay also had a slight odor, which was a bit off-putting.

I really hope they can improve the quality and bring back the flavors that made this place a culinary legend in Surabaya. It’s such a shame to see a beloved local spot lose some of its magic. Despite this, Sate Klopo Ondomohen still holds a special place in Surabaya’s food scene, and with a few adjustments, it could easily reclaim its former glory. I’ll definitely give it another try in the future to see if things...
