Hotel Majapahit â A Grand Legacy of Hospitality
If youâre seeking more than just a hotelâif you want a place with history, soul, and impeccable serviceâHotel Majapahit is it. My experience here was extraordinary in every way. Itâs a rare gem that blends heritage, comfort, and care into something truly memorable.
đď¸ A Living Piece of History
This hotel is a landmark with deep roots in Indonesiaâs past. It played an important role in the countryâs independence movement, and you can feel that legacy in every detail. ⢠Preserved Art Deco architecture ⢠Stained glass windows, retro photographs, and period furniture ⢠Even old-school metal light switchesânothing feels generic
Everything is beautifully maintained and tells a story. Itâs no surprise that Majapahit is the sister property to The Phoenix in Yogyakarta, another hotel that exudes classic elegance and historical significance.
đż An Urban Oasis
Despite being centrally located, the hotel feels completely peaceful and protectedâlike stepping into a serene world apart. ⢠The gardens are lush and quiet, a joy to walk through ⢠The swimming pool is enormous, especially for a city hotel ⢠The spa is beautifully designed, with a calming aroma and welcoming energy from the moment you enter
đ True Comfort & Thoughtful Amenities
Everything you might need has been anticipatedâwithout the flash, but with real quality: ⢠Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and high-end toiletries ⢠A super-comfortable bed with excellent linens ⢠Air conditioning that works well (and quietly) ⢠A TV that can be hidden away if you prefer to unplug ⢠Robes, slippers, bottled water, and poolside service ⢠Many rooms include private balconies for quiet morning or evening moments
đ Excellent Location ⢠Located just down the block from the Soviet submarine museum ⢠Across from a large modern shopping mall ⢠Set on a vibrant street filled with cafĂŠs, eateries, and local life And yet, itâs remarkably quietâa rare combination of convenience and calm.
đŤ Hospitality That Comes from the Heart
What truly makes Majapahit shine is the people. ⢠Staff remember your name, how you like your coffee, and even small conversations from the day before ⢠They offer help gently if you seem lost, without ever intruding ⢠Theyâre always smiling, gracious, and clearly take real pride in their work ⢠If theyâre able, theyâll even upgrade you without your asking
This is the kind of seasoned hospitality that Instagrammable new hotels often lack. Not servile, but genuinely professionalârooted in a sense of tradition and car
In short: Majapahit is not just a hotelâitâs a heritage experience, a sanctuary in the city, and a beautiful reminder of what great hospitality can be when itâs done with heart.
I felt like I wanted to move in and live there and half expected to run into expats Bogart & Bacall. Itâs that kind of vibe (with...
Read moreThis is a historical heritage hotel that is better seen as such than compared against other typical modern hotels. I am fortunate to have the perspective of seeing this hotel through many years, having first stayed here in the 90s when it was a Mandarin Oriental hotel. It is now an Accor M Gallery hotel.
The entrance experience is not the best due to the understated facade with very little set back from the main road; and the encroaching disparate mix of old and modern buildings. Look pass this through the entrance lobby and the old grandeur becomes apparent. The verandahs and courtyard gardens afford pleasant views from guest rooms and common spaces, with no discernable street noise at all.
The guest rooms are wonderfully spacious, comfortable, clean and beautifully furnished, with extensive use of polished wood, brass and marble. Most have a small balcony or patio.
This is a very charming property despite showing signs of needing a fairly extensive maintenance cycle. Some common spaces look obviously worn. But the guest rooms are still looking very good despite some minor niggles- like a leaky shower screen seal and chipped balcony table. These faults should not be an issue unless you're particularly sharp eyed and fastidious. It does not detract from the heritage experience and, for me, a very pleasant stay.
Facilities and amenities are adequate throughout. There is a good well equipped gym facing the pool and a beautiful spa. F&B is satisfactory and adequate for stays of several days. Sarkies restaurant, which offered more of a culinary experience, is presently closed. I'm told due to slow post-Covid business. Indigo is the only restaurant on site now. It is open all day and serves a basic breakfast buffet. Maj bar remains open and boasts a live band and singer with unfortunately too few guests. The hotel is in an area with many alternative F&B choices for longer stay guests.
I find the Majapahit perfectly respectable for my business trips though it makes no pretense at being a five star business hotel. If you're traveling around Indonesia or in the Surabaya/ East Java region, I highly recommend a visit to the Majapahit. Beautiful pleasant character hotel, good value and a storied history that is well covered on...
Read moreMy friend and I had a unique experience during our stay at the esteemed Majapahit Hotel. While we trusted the high ratings and exceptional service reflected on Agoda, our personal experience didn't align with those expectations.
Upon our arrival at around 8:30 pm in the evening, we checked in and decided to leave our bags to enjoy a nice dinner. To our dismay, when we returned and were ready to settle in for the night, we were shocked to encounter an unexpected nightmare.
We encountered these challenges during our stay: The cleanliness of the sheets and pillows, despite them being changed three times. This is the basic hygiene check, which was unexpected for a 5-star establishment. The lighting in the bathroom was not properly fixed and posed a potential hazard. The restroom became clogged, resulting in a flooding issue that occurred twice despite the initial resolution. The staff seemed unprepared and uncertain about certain procedures and frequently sought advice from us on what to do next. This have caused us a huge inconvenience during our late-night encounter that took place at 1:00 in the morning. Despite our patience and giving them space, the issues was not resolved repeatedly, leading to a sleepless night and an early checkout, which caused us inconvenience.
These inconveniences could have been avoided with proper checks and due diligence from the staff and team. This was unexpected and fell short of my expectations. I believe that attention to detail in maintaining cleanliness is crucial for a hotel that that boasts such a high ratings.
Discovering discrepancies between the reflected ratings and the reality of upcoming trips is truly concerning on Agoda. I sincerely hope for reassurance and a restoration of confidence in the consistent quality and...
