It was our first time to eat here as a family (myself, my parents and my two children) on Sunday 13th August. Super location and view. We had booked in advance that day and staff gave us some leeway when narrowing down to a time (the booking was for between 1.30 pm & 2pm). We had mains and desserts for the Sunday earlybird at €29.50 each. We tried Catch of the day served with salad and roast potatoes (Seabream), Sach Tava (akin to a curry) and Lasagne between the adults. I thoroughly enjoyed my Sach Tava and there were positive reports from my parents on their mains & portions were very good. I noticed the lasagne wasn't served with a salad and I'm not sure if the roast potatoes came with the fish dish only or to be shared between the fish and lasagne dishes. All desserts are priced at €7. So that left all our mains priced at €22.50 which to be honest is definitely too steep for a lasagne and curry but then that's what we fancied eating and chose on the day. I ordered a Marguerita pizza for the kids (both under 5) to share which included a dessert of one icecream at €12. For desserts, we were given more choice than on the earlybird menu, we had 2 x tiramisu and 1 apple crumble between us: all very good. Unfortunately no pictures of these as my phone battery expired playing Shaun the sheep to entertain). Very kindly, when I ordered the icecream for the children (I intended to share it between them), the waiter said he'd bring one extra at no extra cost. Lovely touch. In terms of service, mostly very good but there was one slip of the hospitable mask by the young female waitress: when she brought the fish and lasagne dishes; I asked does the fish come with potatoes (in case we had to order a side) and she responded with 'I only have two hands' which I thought was quite off. Luckily my parents who are hard of hearing didn't hear this impolite quip. Bottle of Heineken zero priced at €6 (again on the pricey side) & pint of Guiness €6. All in all the rating reflects our experience as a family. Kudos for being kid-friendly: keep that up & even have colouring books and colours to...
Read moreThis place tries to be what it's not. Based on the reviews I was expecting a great experience. Overall it wasn't a bad experience. But based on the price of the food and reviews my expectations were set rather high. The wine that I ordered (Cotes DU Rhone) which I have a hard time finding a bad bottle, this wasn't even average to the many Cotes du Rhone's that I have tried. It's about 7/10 but that's subjective. Then I ordered French Onion soup which was one of the poorest attempts that I tried. I'm used to a mount of cheese on top. This soup had pieces of bread where some were hard and didn't complement the texture. Also there was very little cheese and it was on the bottom. Best Gruyere cheese that I had in a French Onion soup was very salty but the sweet onion soup diluted it and made it the best I've ever tried. Average French Onion soup would have a lot more cheese even if it's average. The main dish Lamb Confit in Filo pastry wasn't it. The lamb itself was great but the whole dish was below average,it was very bland. I felt like I ordered lamb spring rolls. The dish did not complement the lamb taste at all. It was filled with a lot of sauce. The best thing about the dish were the side vegetables and the best was the zucchini which I only got 1 piece. My recommendations would be to use salty Gruyere cheese for french onion soup. To capitalize on the delicious lamb taste in Ireland. Use more zucchini. Last which way be a stretch but there are no oyster places in Athlone. If this place imported oysters from Galway or nearby, it will get a larger crowd even with the more expensive prices that...
Read moreBacchus Restaurant has a dominantly Turkish cuisine with a touch of Mediterranean flavors. Their limited options on the menu, works to their advantage, as it prevents an overwhelming decision making experience. Although the wait time for the food is a little longer than other restaurants, the details that go into the food shines through every dish and proves the kitchen staff has a zeal for creativity.
Going on a Sunday felt empty as half of the restaurant was nestled in the corner by the entrance. Its close seating arrangement still felt cozy and intimate despite how many people were there. The wait staff didn’t serve just one table but all and any table that was willing. It’s a great setup that enhances the overall exclusivity of the dining experience.
Having sat by the window, the seating provides a breathtaking view of the Tourism Centre. Which is linked between the Custume Place Bridge.
In terms of the food itself, Bacchus Restaurant deserves a solid 4 out of 5, indicating a high level of satisfaction but dissatisfaction when it came down to desserts...
