Con's Bar — Restaurant in County Westmeath

I got parked directly outside the door. Went in and ordered the Honey and Mustard baked Baked Bacon. I normal order Ham if it's on the menu wherever I travel but this dish was sublime. I was so impressed. Normally what can happen in some establishments is they choose a cheap ham and mask the saltiness with the sauses used to marinate and cook the joint in which means you finish up only tasting the sauce, but this dish had a super balance of flavor with a delicate taste of the honey and Mustard. I was so impressed. I decided to have a dessert.... Which I never really do, but the lunch was so good I was anxious to try one of the desserts. I asked the barman to recommend one as I couldn't choose between the cheesecake or the Berry pie. He recommended the pie.

Well.... This just surpassed all my expectations. I could only but finish with a lovely cappuccino. So much for running in for a quick snack. So my experience that Monday lunchtime stayed with me to the extent that it enabled me to with this review a week later. (I normally can't remember what I ate yesterday). I don't normally write long reviews but to do the place justice I had to try and write a review that merited the food quality for the interests of the casual traveler.... There are not too many options for fine dining in Mullingar these days so Con’s Gastro Pub was very welcomed addition in the last year. But!!! The last two visits we’ve had to this establishment have leave’t us wondering why have the original standards dropped so dramatically?? Change of chef? Change of presentation and quality of dishes and absolutely no added dishes or change of menu!! There has never been any specials offered and if you ask for a wine it will be plonked onto the table with screw cap attached! I can excuse much of the above when the food is great but when food and service is depleting so dismally as it has done in Con’s, there is simply no excuse. such a shame. have they changed the chief? menu the same but the attention to detail and flavour is gone. Whoever set up the menu did a great job, but the love and knowledge is gone with him. 2nd time to be disappointed in a month. Starters used to be very individual with different dressings on different salads, really unique tastes but now. it's all the same. Main course of steak was a bit sloppy and not seared properly and pork had zero crackling thrown on mash and cabbage.
