Kin Khao Thai — Restaurant in County Westmeath

I don’t normally leave reviews but I felt that our experience merited one. I used to love this restaurant but haven’t been for four years so I was excited to go. We went on New Years eve and got the early bird- I know this is a bad time to eat out but the level of service was in no way acceptable. We were told over the phone that they would need the seats back at a certain time despite that fact that we were left for 15 minutes when we sat down without any interaction and the due to the restaurant not being busy. When our waiter eventually did approach the table, he said nothing and was bordering on rude. (He just seemed like he didn’t want to be there). The food was disappointing, the starters lacked any Flavour and the main courses were tiny, although the curries had nice flavour as before (I know I had early bird but it was very small). The desserts were lovely. The nail in the coffin was the fact that americanos were quarter filled, not sure if it was a cost cutting measure or a way to instruct us to finish up and leave. We did not feel there was any need to say anything at this point as another diner had voiced his displeasure of the experience but it didn’t seem to reasonate. We were in athlone for the day. My wife was craving thai food and we decided to dine here. First thing, we were greeted downstairs by a rude waiter, he asked us to leave within an hour. We didn't mind as we were only looking for a quick bite anyways. Great decor and atmosphere have to say.

We then went upstairs. A lovely young man took our order, he was very polite and showed us the daily meals. Anyways, we ordered 2 mains. Was very disappointed with the portion sizes, we were left still hungry and ordered more rice to fill us up. The prices were extremely unreasonable and overpriced for the quality of food and portion we received. I swear my wife who is not thai makes better thai curries than what we had.

Following this we got up from our seats and started wearing our coats and the same guy that greated us downstairs came up to us and said sarcastically "will you not have tea/coffee or deserts ?" That was the end for us. How can you ask that to someone who is leaving. Just mind blowing.
